IN COMING TOGETHER COMMUNITY BASED SOLUTIONS ARE DERIVED TO MEET EDUCATIONAL, HOUSING, HEALTH, EMPLOYMENT, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, NUTRITION AND OTHER CONCERNS AS RAISED.
FIRST ACHIEVEMENT
FORM 990-EZ, PART III, LINE 28
EDUCATION PROGRAMS ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) - IN 2010, EL KILOMBO OFFERED A TOTAL OF FOUR ESL ADULT COURSES, EACH HELD TWICE PER WEEK. THE PROGRAM ASSISTED OVER SIXTY (60) ADULTS IN ENHANCING THEIR SPEAKING, LISTENING, AND WRITING ENGLISH PROFICIENCY, WHILE PROVIDING CHILD CARE AND HOMEWORK HELP FOR CHILDREN OF LEAST TWENTY-FOUR (24) OF THOSE PARENTS DURING CLASSES. HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE - IN 2010, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED OVER NINE HUNDRED (900) HOURS OF HOMEWORK HELP TO APPROXIMATELY FORTY DIFFERENT CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF FIVE AND SEVENTEEN. PARENTS HAVE RECEIVED ASSISTANCE WITH SCHOOL CONCERNS AS WELL AS TRANSLATION OF SCHOOL DOCUMENTS WHEN NEEDED. COMPUTER LITERACY AND TECHNOLOGY ACCESS - EL KILOMBO OFFERED ONE (1) ADULT COMPUTER LITERACY CLASS IN SPANISH AND ONE (1) ADULT COMPUTER LITERACY CLASS IN ENGLISH, ENROLLING SEVENTEEN (17) ADULTS IN THE COURSES. FREE INTERNET AND COMPUTER ACCESS AND ONE-ON-ONE COMPUTER ASSISTANCE WAS ALSO PROVIDED.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, OUTREACH AND OTHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN 2010, EL KILOMBO SPONSORED NUMEROUS COMMUNITY-BUILDING AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS INCLUDING AN ANNUAL COMMUNITY FESTIVAL INVOLVING FREE FOOD, MUSIC, AND GAMES AMONG TWO HUNDRED (200) RESIDENTS, COMMUNITY FORUMS ADDRESSING NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERNS, AS WELL AS DOOR-TO-DOOR OUTREACH PUBLICIZING FREE COMMUNITY PROGRAMS. ASSEMBLY - EL KILOMBO PROMOTES COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, DIRECT DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION AND DECISION MAKING ON COMMUNITY CONCERNS. ASSEMBLY GATHERINGS INVOLVE DISCUSSION, EDUCATION, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND CAPACITY BUILDING. COMMUNITY GARDEN - THROUGH THE COMMUNITY GARDEN, TWENTY (20) FAMILIES HAVE DIRECTLY PARTICIPATED IN CULTIVATING ORGANIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES FREELY DISTRIBUTED TO NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS. LARGE COMMUNITY GARDEN WORK DAYS, AS WELL AS DAILY AND WEEKLY PARTICIPATION IN THE CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF THE GARDEN HAVE PROMOTED POSITIVE COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS AND INCREASED THE UNDERSTANDING OF FOOD AND GARDENING. HEALTH INITIATIVE - EL KILOMBO ORGANIZED A BILINGUAL EYE SCREENING DAY IN WHICH THIRTY-EIGHT (38) PEOPLE RECEIVED VISION SCREENINGS, INCLUDING A GLAUCOMA SCREENING. ALMOST HALF OF THOSE SCREENED INDICATED HAVING DIABETES WITH APPROXIMATELY 40% RECEIVING AN EYE EXAM FOR THE FIRST TIME. SIXTEEN (16) PEOPLE RECEIVED REFERRALS FOR FURTHER CARE. YOUTH LITERACY - EL KILOMBO PROMOTED LITERACY AND CREATIVE LEARNING THROUGH A WEEKLY KIDS' LITERACY CLASS INVOLVING INTERACTIVE GAMES, CRAFTS, AND LIBRARY TRIPS. FIFTEEN (15) CHILDREN WERE SERVED IN 2010. A LENDING LIBRARY ALSO PROVIDED ACCESS TO READING RESOURCES FOR CHILDREN AND PARENTS IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH.
THIRD ACHIEVEMENT

HOUSING PROGRAM EL KILOMBO HAS HELPED ENSURE ACCESS TO PERMANENTLY AFFORDABLE AND QUALITY HOUSING TO LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS. EL KILOMBO HAS WORKED WITH RESIDENTS TO IDENTIFY HOUSING NEEDS AND BARRIERS TO ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, AS WELL AS WELL AS TRAINED SIX (6) RESIDENTS TO BE HOUSING ADVOCATES THAT ASSIST LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS WITH HOUSING CONCERNS. THROUGH COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS, A MODEL WAS DEVELOPED FOR COOPERATIVELY RUN AND MANAGED, RESIDENT-CONTROLLED, QUALITY AFFORDABLE RENTAL HOUSING.
