What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? THE PURPOSE OF THE SOCIETY SHALL BE TO FURTHER EDUCATION IN AND OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE, INCLUDING THE SUPPORT AND PROMOTION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND TO PROVIDE ONGOING PUBLIC EDUCATION ON THE PURPOSES OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE. IT WILL FOSTER THE DEVELOPMENT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACCESS TO OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR THE PEOPLE OF RHODE ISLAND, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN UNDERSERVED AREAS, AND TO FURTHER ALL OTHER PURPOSES OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE.

28 Another way RISOPS offers members education and support is through our Dinner Speaker Series Program. Held on a monthly basis, this dinner program is sponsored by a pharmaceutical or medical device company. Although CME credit is not offered, programs do include dinner and a lecture. This venue offers members a chance to learn about new areas of disease management and treatment options for their patients. In 2010, RISOPS hosted 10 dinner programs. Attendance at each program averages between 15 - 20 physicians.

29 RISOPS sponsors an annual continuing medical education (CME) program each year in August. Last year our Yankee Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency Newport Hotel from August 20 - 22, in Newport, Rhode Island. The program offered a total of 21.5 hours of CME credit. There were 90 attendees representing nine states across the northeast. The majority of attendees were from the states of Rhode Island. An exhibit hall with 32 vendors displaying products and services was included as part of this meeting. Vendors were also included in an evening reception for all conference attendees. This reception allowed physicians the opportunity to network with colleagues and speak with exhibitors. The program agenda included a variety of speakers lecturing on a variety of medical topics. Areas of medicine discussed included dermatology, pediatrics, oncology, OMT, ophthalmology, cardiology, radiology, internal medicine, and rheumatology. Additional presenters discussed electronic medical records and insurance issues. A general business meeting for RISOPS members was held during the conference. The newly elected AOA President, Karen Nichols, DO, attended and spoke to the group about changes in the process of how physicians need to maintain their certification. Dr. Marc Hahn, Dean of the University of New England School of Osteopathic Medicine, also discussed plans to increase the size and scope of osteopathic schools to accommodate the ever-growing need for primary care physicians.
