What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? As a journalism advocacy organization, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press.
Describe what was achieved in carrying out the organization's exempt purposes. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Public, Society Benefit Programs, General/Other: We have about 300 members from the Greater Philadelphia area including southern New Jersey and northern Delaware. Our members include reporters, editors, photographers, graphic artists, broadcasters and other media professionals. We sponsor several programs a year including panels on topics and workshops timely to the profession. In recent years, many of our programs have been held at the Pen & Pencil Club, 1522 Latimer St. in Center City Philadelphia. We also sponsor an annual high school career conference, a scholarship program and an annual excellence in journalism contest that culminates with an awards banquet in June.
