What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Promote increased productivity and improved competitiveness in the gulf coast shipbuilding industry by raising public awareness of the shipbuilding industry in the gulf coast, establishing a steady stream of trained workers for the gulf coast shipbuildinig and repair industry.
Describe what was achieved in carrying out the organization's exempt purposes. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Held annual meeting and other meetings to update members on state of the industry, provide professional development opportunities and the updates on the organization. Meetings included breakout sessions led by industry experts in the areas of Health and Safety, production, welding, standardized training, reciprocal safety training, workforce development and nationally recognized credentials. Over 200 individuals attended these meetings.

29 GSSC partnered with the South Alabama Workforce Development Council for Alabama (SAWDC) Region 9 to design, construct, and staff the Maritime World in the frist ever SAWDC Worlds of Opportunity job awareness fair for 8th grade students. Over two days, over 8000 8th grade students from public school systems in 6 Alabama counties were exposed to many different career "worlds". In the Maritime World there were hands on exhibits covering many of the craft trades like pipe fitting, electrical, welding, rigging, ship fitting, composite materials, as well as engineering, ship design, HR and others. In addition to providing exhibits and hands on activities (including a welding simulator), GSSC provided hard hats and safety glasses to students to emphasize safety and safe working habits. GSSC played a major role in the planning of the overall event which included 8 different "world" of work. Many hours of planning, preparation, coordination of assests, displays, give aways and countless volunteer manhours were provided by GSSC and its members, the value of which is not shown here. Expenses shown here are actual funds spent on this program.

30 Continued the development of regionally recognized, standardized modular shipfitter curriculum and credentials to be used to train new and incumbent shipbuilding and repair workers. GSSC held numerous face to face meetings of approximately 18 shipfitter subject matter experts and supervisors from member shipyards to define required knowledge, skills, abilities and tasks of successful shipfitters. Facilitated many other conference calls and web based meetings to continue development and review of the curriculum, including students guides, instructor guides, performance based assessments and power point teaching aids. This activity supports our long range goal of establishing a steady stream of trained workers for the industry. The curriculum will be validated through GSSC sponsored boot camps in 2011.

GSSC continued discussions with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) on a partnership to develop maritime specific curriculum by using existing NCCER curriculum and certifications created for industrial construction as a basis. In addition, GSSC applied as a NCCER Accredited Training Sponsor, created a GSSC training Center Policy and procedure manual. GSSC continued meetings and independent reviews with approximately 15 industry subject matter experts in welding, electrical and pipe fitting trades to evaluate the NCCER materials and to identify gaps in order to determine the costs for NCCER to develop curriculum for three (3) trades and a maritime shipbuilding core curriculum. The long term goal to have nationally recognized training curriculum and certifications for the shipbuilding trades remains.
