Explanation
FORM 990, PAGE 1, PART 1, LINE 1
FOUNDED IN 1956, THE FAIR HOUSING COUNCIL OF SUBURBAN PHILADELPHIA (FHCSP) IS THE NATION'S OLDEST FAIR HOUSING AGENCY. FHCSP'S SERVICE AREA COVERS THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA AND BUCKS, CHESTER, DELAWARE, LEHIGH AND MONTGOMERY COUNTIES. FHCSP IS A UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT (HUD) DESIGNATED QUALIFIED FAIR HOUSING ENFORCEMENT ORGANIZATION. FHCSP CARRIES OUT AMBITIOUS PROGRAMS TO ENSURE EQUAL ACCESS TO HOUSING FOR LOW AND MODERATE INCOME MEMBERS OF THE PROTECTED CLASSES. THE WORK OF FHCSP WAS FEATURED IN "THE STATE OF FAIR HOUSING-ANNUAL REPORT ON FAIR HOUSING FY 2009" WHICH UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT SECRETARY SHAUN DONOVAN SUBMITTED TO THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES ON JULY 14, 2010. FHCSP'S EDUCATION PROGRAM PROVIDES CONSUMERS, SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND MEMBERS OF THE REAL ESTATE, LENDING AND INSURANCE INDUSTRIES WITH ACCURATE, CURRENT AND UNDERSTANDABLE INFORMATION CONCERNING THEIR RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES UNDER THE FAIR HOUSING ACT. FHCSP CARRIES OUT ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES BY METHODICALLY TESTING AND INVESTIGATING RENTAL, SALES, MORTGAGE LENDING, AND HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE PRACTICES TO SUPPORT ALLEGATIONS OF THOSE WHO BELIEVE THEY WERE VICTIMS OF HOUSING DISCRIMINATION; ADJUDICATING HOUSING DISCRIMINATION LAWSUITS AND ADMINISTRATIVE COMPLAINTS; AND COUNSELING VICTIMS OF HOUSING DISCRIMINATION ON THEIR OPTION FOR REDRESS. A TANGIBLE MEASURE OF FHCSP'S ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM IS ERADICATING DISCRIMINATION AT 46,883 UNITS OF HOUSING IN THE REGION AND RECOVERING $1,635,716 FOR VICTIMS OF HOUSING DISCRIMINATION. THE GREATER IMPACT IS THE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE GAINED ACCESS TO THE JOBS, SCHOOLING AND RESOURCES THEY NEED TO PROVIDE A BETTER LIFE FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES BECAUSE OF FHCSP'S EFFORTS TO ENSURE THAT THE REGION CONTINUES TO GROW INTO A VIBRANT, DIVERSE GROUP OF COMMUNITIES WHERE ALL NEIGHBORS ARE TOLERATED AND RESPECTED, REGARDLESS OF THEIR SOCIO-CULTURAL BACKGROUND, FAMILY STATUS OR APPEARANCE.
