With support from various other sources, JCVI conducts research which has uncovered more than six million new genes and thousands of new protein families from organisms found in sea water; sequenced microbial flora found in human environments such as the vagina, oral cavity and human gut; and sequenced a variety of important infectious disease agents, microbial and environmental genomes and plant genomes.

J. Craig Venter is the CEO of the J. Craig Venter Institute, Synthetic Genomics, Inc., and Synthetic Genomics Vaccines, Inc. He is the Chairman of the J. Craig Venter Institute and a board member of Synthetic Genomics, Inc., and Synthetic Genomic Vaccines, Inc. He is a shareholder of Synthetic Genomics, Inc. JCVI trustee and employee Hamilton O. Smith is a co-founder, board member, employee, and shareholder of Synthetic Genomics, Inc. JCVI trustee and employee Kenneth Nealson is a member of the scientific advisory board of Synthetic Genomics, Inc. and a consultant. JCVI employee Clyde Hutchison is the Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of Synthetic Genomics, Inc. and a shareholder of Synthetic Genomics, Inc. Erling Norrby is a board member of both the J. Craig Venter Institute and Synthetic Genomics Vaccines, Inc. The Audit Committee of the Board reviewed the Form 990 and the supporting schedules with the CFO and the organization's 990 preparer in detail. A complete copy of the Form 990 and supporting schedules was also provided to the full board for approval and review prior to being filed.
Policies

The organization's written conflict of interest, whistleblower, and document retention policies were reviewed by the board during 2010. However, the 2010 Form 990 instructions were released in December 2010 and the organization did not have time for its Board to meet to formally adopt the policies prior to its year end. JCVI monitors compliance of Conflict of Interest policy through an annual solicitation of conflict of interest statement from trustees, officers and employees.

JCVI uses Mercer, an outside compensation consultant, to provide a list of comparable salaries for the Chief Executive Officer, Directors of Maryland and California, Chief Financial Officer, and General Counsel. Until December 16, 2010, Kenneth Nealson's average hours per week was 20 hours per week. The remainder of the year he worked an average of 8 hours per week.
