OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Preservation and conservation of cemetery archives:The archives conservation project has enabled Laurel Hill Cemetery Company,the Friends of Laurel Hill Cemetery, and historians and researchers to have much better access to vital historical records of the Cemetery's families and of its development since 1836. These records are now catalogued and preserved for future generations. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Cemetery tours and educational programs:The Friends of Laurel Hill Cemetery prepare the necessary research and conduct the private and scheduled tours each year for approximately 3,000 of the 12,000 visitors each year. These tours are provided on a volunteer basis. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: Restoration of the Medallion Garden section:As Laurel Hill's oldest section and the site of its first burial, the Medallion Gardens (aka Shrubbery) restoration was the first piece of the Friends' long-term Landscape Restoration Project, which will be many future years in the making. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: Strategic planning:The Friends participated in an organization-wide initiative to update the Organization's mission statement and strategic plans. The FLHC Board formally adopted their revised mission statement and 5 year plan in November 2010. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 9: Celebration for the 175th anniversery of the Laurel Hill cemetery:2011 will mark the 175th year of Laurel Hill Cemetery. To commemorate the anniversary, the Friends will be undertaking a number of special initiatives in addition to their regular programming and activities. These include the publication of a new book; the planting of 175 new trees; the completed restoration of the Medallion Gardens; the launch of a Civil War Sesquicentennial exhibit; the installation of gravestones at three unmarked graves of historic notables; the installation of two memorial benches; and the execution of two major anniversary events. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 10: Philadelphia Mural Arts Program:The Friends dedicated $5,000 towards the estimated $17,000 cost required for the development and installation of a mural, (spearheaded by the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program), on the cemetery-owned building at 3801 Ridge Avenue. The mural is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2011.
