Explanation
PAGE 1, PART I-SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES
1. Transportation:Inspired by a visionary idea from one of our advisors, the Campaign capitalized on a funding opportunity from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to convene partners and propose an innovative dynamic ridesharing project. Using smart phone technology and financial incentives, this project will enable people to carpool. This 3-county program is expected to roll out in the fall of 2011. 2. Energy efficiency: The Campaign was instrumental in bringing in $ 2.6 million for a countywide, comprehensive energy efficiency retrofit initiative. The Campaign is the guiding force and implementation manager for this initiative in Sonoma County, that provides financial incentives for customers to reduce energy use in their homes through energy efficiency and which calls for retrofitting 13,000 buildings over the next two years. 3. Power-Up Locally - Renewables:Continued work with our partners on a project funded by a grant from the California Energy Commission which is designing the transformation of the energy infrastructure in Sonoma County from fossil fuels to renewables. Project collaborators include Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Sonoma County Water Agency, the Regional Climate Protection Authority, Local Power, and the Climate Protection Campaign. Once the project is complete, we will have a refined map of the best locations for renewable energy facilities. 4. Cool Schools: Campaign staff worked on implementing the grants that were awarded last year to three schools as part of the 350 Cool Schools Challenge. With the Campaign's help Montgomery, El Molino and Analy High School all implemented solid was reduction projects and education in their schools on this topic. With our partners we also hosted a Green Team Convention, were students were trained as environmental and climate activists and shared best practices.5. Conserve and Capture - Solid Waste: Last year we helped stop the sale of the County's solid waste system. Based on our analysis, selling would have impeded climate protection efforts. In the aftermath of this decision, we are leading an initiative with local officials, businesses and key stakeholders to develop a sustainable system for managing Sonoma County's solid waste. This initiative will be an inspiring model to show how the community comes together to solve complex problems.6. Educated public officials about market-based solutions that protect middle and low income people from higher energy costs and their relevance to the effective implementation of California state law AB32 (Global Warming Solutions Act).7. Provided a status report and analysis by sector of Sonoma County's greenhouse gas emissions at the annual climate protection conference.
