ORGANIZATION'S MISSION
FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION
ROSTRO DE CRISTO IS A CATHOLIC PROGRAM WHOSE MISSION IS TO PROVIDE SPIRITUAL AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE FROM THE UNITED STATES TO LIVE OUT THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST TOGETHER WITH THE PEOPLE OF ECUADOR.
ALL OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS DESCRIPTION
FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4D
ROSTRO DE CRISTO VOLUNTEERS FROM THE US LIVING WITH AND SERVING THE PEOPLE OF ECUADOR FOR 22 YEARS, ROSTRO DE CRISTO (WHICH MEANS "THE FACE OF CHRIST" IN SPANISH) HAS BEEN PROVIDING VOLUNTEER LAY MISSIONARY EXPERIENCES IN ECUADOR AND PROVIDING SUPPORT TO EDUCATIONAL AND MEDICAL PROJECTS IN ECUADOR. ROSTRO DE CRISTO (RDC) OFFERS SHORT-TERM AND YEAR-LONG OPPORTUNITIES TO LIVE SIMPLY AND SERVE IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF DURAN AND MT. SINAI, BOTH NEAR GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR. IN ADDITION TO A FAITH-FILLED EXPERIENCE OF REFLECTION AND PRAYER, RDC VOLUNTEERS SERVE IN SCHOOLS, MEDICAL CLINICS, DAY-CARE AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS, SOUP KITCHENS, AND COMMUNITY WORK PROJECTS. DURAN IS A SPRAWLING URBAN CENTER OF ALMOST ONE MILLION PEOPLE, MOST OF WHOM ARE UNDEREMPLOYED OR UNEMPLOYED AND LACKING MOST BASIC SERVICES. RDC FOCUSES ITS ATTENTION ON THE POOREST OF THESE. BY LIVING AMONG AND SERVING THAT COMMUNITY, RDC PROVIDES AN EXTRAORDINARY AND UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR VOLUNTEERS AND RETREAT PARTICIPANTS FROM THE UNITED STATES TO INTERACT WITH THE PEOPLE OF ECUADOR TO BETTER UNDERSTAND BOTH SIMILARITIES AS WELL AS DIFFERENCES, WHICH PROMOTES A BETTER US-LATIN AMERICAN UNDERSTANDING AND SOLIDARITY, AND ALSO OFFERS A PROFOUND VIEW OF HOW FAITH SUSTAINS THE PEOPLE OF ECUADOR IN THEIR DAILY LIVES. RDC FULFILLS ITS SPIRITUAL AND EDUCATIONAL MISSION IN TWO WAYS: BY OFFERING VOLUNTEER AND RETREAT EXPERIENCES TO YOUNG ADULTS FROM THE UNITED SATES WHILE ALSO MANAGING AND SUPPORTING VARIOUS EDUCATION, HEALTH AND OTHER SOCIAL SERVICE PROJECTS. 2010 OUR RDC COMMUNITY IS IN GROWING IN TREMENDOUS WAYS AND WE ARE ABLE TO REACH OUT IN YET ANOTHER COMMUNITY IN ECUADOR. OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE MOSTLY RECENT COLLEGE GRADUATES THAT COMMIT TO ONE FULL YEAR OF SERVICE IN DURAN, ECUADOR. RDC HELPS PEOPLE IN THE U.S. TO LIVE IN A CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY WHILE SERVING THE POOR. IN 2010 WE WERE ABLE TO SUPPORT AND HOUSE 16 ONE-YEAR VOLUNTEERS IN THE AREAS OF ANTONIO JOSE DE SUCRE AND EL ARBOLITO, AS WELL AS IN THE AREA OF MT. SINAI. THE RDC MISSION IS ACHIEVED BY BEING, WORKING, PRAYING AND SHARING A COMMON FAITH WITH THE PEOPLE OF ECUADOR. MT. SINAI ANOTHER EXCITING VENTURE FOR ROSTRO IN 2010 WAS THE DECISION TO EXPAND TO A NEW LOCATION. THIS YEAR, ROSTRO HAS A PRESENCE IN A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD, MONTE SINAI (IN ENGLISH MOUNT SINAI). LOCATED ON THE PERIMETRAL, IN NORTHWEST GUAYAQUIL, ABOUT AN HOUR BY CAR FROM OUR HOUSES IN DURAN, THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IS CURRENTLY HOME TO FIVE VOLUNTEERS. IN 2010, WE WERE EXCITED TO COMPLETE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW VOLUNTEER HOUSE FOR THIS NEW AREA. PEOPLE BEGAN MOVING TO MONTE SINAI AROUND SEVEN YEARS AGO. IT BEGAN AS UNINHABITED SWAMP OWNED BY A MAN BY THE NAME OF MARCO SOLIS. TO ENTICE PEOPLE TO BUY LAND IN MONTE SINAI, PLOTS WERE SOLD VERY INEXPENSIVELY. WHEN THE FIRST PEOPLE MOVED INTO MOUNT SINAI, NEITHER BUSES NOR WATER TRUCKS ENTERED THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THERE WERE NO STORES, AND NO BASIC SERVICES. NEIGHBORS HAD TO WALK A MILE OR SO TO A MAIN PAVED ROAD TO WAIT FOR WATER TRUCKS SO THEIR FAMILY COULD RECEIVE WATER OR TO CATCH A BUS TO BUY FOOD OR GO TO SCHOOL. NOW, AFTER MUCH TIME AND STRUGGLE, THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS GROWING AND CHANGING. RECENTLY, PRESIDENT CORREA FUNDED A NEW PAVED ROAD THAT RUNS THROUGH THE CENTER OF TOWN, AND THERE ARE PLANS TO ADD SIDEWALKS AND STREET LIGHTS. THERE ARE THREE FUNCTIONING PUBLIC SCHOOLS, A FEW PRIVATE SCHOOLS, A NEW CLINIC, STORES AND SMALL BUSINESSES. A NUMBER OF INDIGENOUS (PRIMARILY QUECHUA) FAMILIES HAVE MIGRATED TO THIS AREA FROM ECUADOR'S HIGHLAND REGIONS IN SEARCH OF WORK AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. IN ORDER TO MEET THEIR NEEDS, THE ARCHDIOCESE OF GUAYAQUIL AND HOGAR DE CRISTO HAVE BEEN WORKING TO HELP ESTABLISH AN AREA OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE THEY CAN PRESERVE THEIR CULTURE AND MAINTAIN A SENSE OF COMMUNITY HERE IN GUAYAQUIL. THE MOUNT SINAI COMMUNITY IS STILL IN THE BEGINNING STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT AS PEOPLE ARE CONTINUALLY MOVING INTO THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. THERE IS STILL NO RUNNING WATER, NO DRAINAGE SYSTEM, NO TRASH PICK-UP, AND THE VAST MAJORITY OF STREETS ARE NOT PAVED. IN THE DRY MONTHS, RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS ARE COMMON DUE TO THE IMMENSE AMOUNT OF DUST, AND FLOODING IS STILL A MAJOR PROBLEM IN THE RAINY SEASON. THE VAST MAJORITY OF HOMES ARE CONSTRUCTED OF BAMBOO CANE. IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR AN ENTIRE FAMILY TO LIVE IN A ONE OR TWO ROOM HOUSE. THE PARISH CORPUS CRISTI, RUN BY FATHER COLM HOGAN AND SOON FR. JOHN, IRISH PRIESTS OF THE ST. JAMES SOCIETY, IS A VIBRANT FAITH COMMUNITY. ROSTRO VOLUNTEERS SPEND THEIR SATURDAY AFTERNOONS OR SUNDAY MORNINGS GIVING CATECHISM CLASSES IN ONE OF THE THREE CHAPELS THAT COMPRISE THE PARISH. ALONG WITH FATHER COLMS DYNAMIC PRESENCE, ROSTRO VOLUNTEERS SPEND TIME WITH THE ENERGETIC FILIPENSES NUNS WHO ALSO LIVE IN MOUNT SINAI. THEY RUN A SMALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE VOLUNTEERS ALSO TEACH ONCE A WEEK. VOLUNTEERS FEEL A STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY WITH THE OTHER CATECHISTS IN THE PARISH. THERE ARE MONTHLY PARTIES, MEETINGS, MASSES, SHARED DINNERS, AND OCCASIONAL RETREATS. VOLUNTEERS FIND MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE THEIR FAITH IN MONTE SINAI. ROSTRO DE CRISTO IS ALSO WORKING TO DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LAURETIAN SISTERS, WHO MINISTER TO THE INDIGENOUS POPULATION IN MONTE SINAI. ROSTRO VOLUNTEERS HAVE COME TO KNOW FAMILIES THROUGH THE CHURCH. IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, THESE FAMILIES HAVE TAKEN US IN, FED US AND SHARED WHO THEY ARE WITH A SENSE OF HOSPITALITY AND A GRACE THAT IS ASTOUNDING. WE ARE EXCITED TO CONTINUE BUILDING AND GROWING IN THESE NEW RELATIONSHIPS IN OUR NEW HOME. ROSTRO DE CRISTO VOLUNTEERS SPEND MUCH OF THEIR TIME BEING A PRESENCE IN THE COMMUNITY AND FORMING LOVING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE PEOPLE OF ECUADOR. HOWEVER, VOLUNTEERS ALSO SERVE IN OTHER AREAS OF NEED THROUGHOUT DURAN AND GUAYAQUIL. MORE THAN 125 ONE-YEAR, FULL-TIME VOLUNTEERS HAVE DONATED TIME AND TALENTS IN ECUADOR IN THE PAST 22 YEARS ROSTRO DE CRISTO RETREAT PROGRAM RDC OFFERS SHORT-TERM RETREAT/IMMERSION EXPERIENCES FOR HIGH SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY, PARISH OR OTHER GROUPS: " OVER 3,000 RETREATANTS SINCE 1989 " 2010 PARTICIPANTS INCLUDED 24 HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE GROUPS. TEN INSTITUTIONS HAVE MORE THAN 7 YEARS OF PARTICIPATION.
