| ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION | SOUTH METRO MICROENTERPRISE COALITION, INC. THE MISSION OF SOUTH METRO MICROENTERPRISE COALITION, INC. IS TO STIMULATE ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY WITHIN THE SOUTH METRO AREA BY PROVIDING RESOURCES, TRAINING AND TOOLS FOR SELF-EMPLOYMENT TO STRENGTHEN AND SUSTAIN ENTREPRENEURIAL DEVELOPMENT. OUR HISTORY SOUTH METRO MICROENTERPRISE COALITION, INC., A NON-PROFIT CORPORATION, EMERGED THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF LOCAL UNITED WAYS, BANKS, AND OTHER FOUNDING PARTNERS. IN JULY OF 1998, THE L.E.N.D.E.R.S. NETWORK WAS FORMED TO SERVE FAMILIES IN SEVERAL GEORGIA COUNTIES THAT WERE RECEIVING TANF (TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE TO NEEDY FAMILIES). BY PROVIDING MICRO-ENTERPRISE EDUCATION AND SMALL BUSINESS LOANS THE NETWORK HOPED TO ASSIST THE LOW-TO-MODERATE INCOME SECTOR THROUGH ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND THROUGH THE BENEFITS OF FINANCIAL LITERACY. IN MID-2002 THE BOARD DISCOVERED A SIMILAR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN NEARBY COUNTIES KNOWN AS THE CLAYTON & HENRY MICRO-ENTERPRISE PROJECT. AS A RESULT SOUTH METRO MICROENTERPRISE COALITION (SMMC) WAS FORMED TO SERVE BUTTS, CLAYTON, HENRY, LAMAR, PIKE, SPALDING AND OTHER SOUTHERN CRESCENT COUNTIES IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA. SINCE THAT TIME SMMC HAS BEGUN WORKING TOWARDS ACHIEVING ITS GOAL OF CREATING AN ENTREPRENEURIAL CULTURE IN THESE CHOSEN COMMUNITIES. THE EDUCATIONAL CLASSES REQUIRE 10-12 WEEKS OF INTENSIVE STUDY IN ALL ASPECTS OF SMALL BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. THE COST OF THE CLASS IS BASED UPON THE HOUSEHOLD INCOME OF EACH INDIVIDUAL APPLICANT. NOT ONLY DOES THIS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM PREPARE A STUDENT FOR THE DAY TO DAY RUNNING OF A SMALL BUSINESS IT ALSO BROADENS THEIR AWARENESS OF THE BUSINESS WORLD IN GENERAL AND IMPROVES AN OVERALL UNDERSTANDING OF MANY ASPECTS OF DAILY LIFE. WHILE MANY GO ON TO START THEIR OWN SMALL BUSINESS OTHERS MAY TAKE WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNED AND APPLY IT TO A NEW OR EXISTING JOB WITH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR IMPROVEMENT AND SUCCESSES IN THEIR LIVES. SMMC STRIVES TO REACH INDIVIDUALS OF LOW OR MODERATE INCOME HOUSEHOLDS; HOWEVER, THE CLASS IS OPEN TO ALL INDIVIDUALS WHO DREAM OF BECOMING AN ENTREPRENEUR. |
