OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: BEHAVIOR and TRAINING: WHS redesigned its canine training curriculum this year and expanded basic and advanced training, puppy training and play groups, specialty, trick and agility classes, and individual consultations with WHS's certified pet dog trainer. We trained 338 dogs in classes, served 322 households and had private consultations with an additional 36 pet owners. Pre-adoption consultations are offered on dogs with specific behavioral needs in order to advise and instruct potential adopters. A free seminar titled "Intro to Training" is offered once weekly to all adopters and the public. We continue our successful behavior helpline for adopters and community members, answering 291 inquiries this year. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: VOLUNTEERS: 789 volunteers gave 52,132 hours last year. Volunteers provided quality care and training for shelter pets, staffed events, supported adopters with pet visits and adoptions, provided grounds maintenance and weed abatement, offered administrative support and helped operate our 3 retail/ thrift store locations. Their work provided the services and support equal to 25 FTE (full time equivalent) staff and are crucial to the mission. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: COMMUNITY SPAY/NEUTER ASSISTANCE: The Save the Feline Spay/Neuter program ended its seventeenth year with the opening of our own Spay & Neuter Clinic on January 11th, 2010.Serving the public as well as WHS shelter animals, the clinic conducted 5,108 spay and neuter surgeries. Additional surgeries such as dental cleanings, amputations, growth removals, etc. were performed on shelter animals to enhance adoptability. Over 90% of the clinic's public customers reported no relationship with veterinarians and appreciate the below market fees to encourage sterilization, eliminate unwanted litters and reduce the cat overpopulation. By species, our 5,108 sterilization surgeries included:3,663 Cats1,413 Dogs32 Rabbits
