(Required for section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations and section 4947(a)(1) trusts; optional for others.)
What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Prevention of cruelty to animals in general and rescue, care and adoption of Basset Hounds specifically.
Describe what was achieved in carrying out the organization's exempt purposes. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 We focus on pure-bred Basset Hounds who may end up in animal shelters, humane societies, or are victims of abuse, neglect or unwanted and/or simply misunderstood by their owners. Our Basset Hounds are rescued from shelters by volunteers who then transport them to the rehabilitation center where they are cared for and socialized. Care includes medical care by veterinarians, feeding, grooming, training and any other ways to properly care for the animals. Over the year our organization cared for 547 Basset Hounds and 295 of them were adopted by loving families. Our organization faced a multitude of challenges during 2010. The weather in Southern California presented us with several unusual snowstorms with accompanying very cold weather during the winter, resulting in increased expenses for heat, electricity, repairs and fuel. The Crown Wildfire moved within a two-mile radius of our kennels, our area was declared a Natural Disaster Area and we were on evacuation notice at least twice. We were also the Staging Area for animals and housed an additional 80 during the wildfire episodes. While we felt the impact of these events, so did the local economy. We found ourselves facing not only our own financial crises but also dealing with the struggling economy through a decrease in adoptive homes and an increase in financial crises-precipitated relinquishments of dogs. We responded proactively to these challenges by initiating a Family Crisis Program which provided hounds displaced due to foreclosures a safe haven for a 90-day period in order to allow the family a chance to reunite. During 2010 we had a total of 98 hounds that utilized this program. Our Military Crisis Program also allowed those in the Armed Forces to have their Basset Hounds cared for while deployed thus keeping the dogs safe while their owners served our country. Both programs were successful in keeping canines out of the shelter systems and were funded by grants from generous donors. We were able to care for twelve hounds through this program. We affiliated with a youth rehabilitation program called Phoenix House wherein groupings of inner city youths were brought to our facility to work with the animals. These interconnections provided benefits to the youths and enabled their rehabilitation efforts and thus also provided benefits to the community. We continue to market ourselves through collaborative efforts, creative media campaigns, grant opportunities and grassroots internet fundraising efforts. We took in 547 hounds throughout 2010 and provided them with proper nutrition, medical care, socialization, rehabilitation and love. As a result of the weekend public visitations, networking and efforts of our volunteers, 295 Basset Hounds and other breeds found loving homes through our organization's continuing efforts to match dogs with loving owners. As we look to our future in providing care for rescued Basset Hounds, our Board of Directors are focusing on projects to further the development of our youth education program, increase spay and neuter awareness, improve canine nutritional awareness, broaden our public outreach programs and expand our adoption awareness campaigns. We also look forward to pursuing grants for a senior canine facility and employee staffing for our Acton, California location.

Identifier Return Reference Explanation
Denise Kiss was the Treasurer who needed emergency auto transmission repairs in March, 2010. To enable her to return to her home, the organization paid $1,900 directly to the repair shop as a loan to her. She repaid all but $825 before she resigned her office in September, 2010. Attempts to collect the remainder from her met with hostile resistance and comments. The President and Secretary/Acting Treasurer decided not to pursue further collection efforts.

Client Note 1 - The organization purchased 6 shares of Shannon Valley Limited Partnership for $15,000 during 2010. This Limited Partnership owns the land and buildings on which the organization conducts its tax exempt functions. The main purpose for the investment was to ensure that the landlord would not evict the organization from the property without its having some voice in those types of proceedings. Another goal was to return some of the rent money to the organization and thus benefit the hounds even further.
