| ADDITIONAL | The Delaware County Literacy Council (DCLC) works with adults | |
| PROGRAM | who wish to read, write, speak and understand English, helping | |
| INFORMATION | them to increase their communication skills and to participate more | |
| fully in society. The Council uses volunteers to ensure that | ||
| programs are free and accessible to everyone. | ||
| At DCLC we have the opportunity to change lives. Once adult | ||
| learners have overcome the shame of having limited literacy skills | ||
| and ask for help, they are offered individual or group instruction to | ||
| help them increase their proficiency and obtain their goals. Each | ||
| year, more than 500 adult learners come to DCLC for literacy help. | ||
| Some just want to be able to read to their children, some need their GED, | ||
| some are immigrants who need to learn English, and some seek job growth. | ||
| Grace, a Polish immigrant who came to the United States eight years | ||
| ago, is just such a person. She was an engineer in Poland who never | ||

| imagined that she would gain sufficient English proficiency to work | ||
| as an engineer in the United States. Grace studied English as a | ||
| Second Language (ESL) at Delaware County Literacy Council | ||
| (DCLC) for four years. Even though her English improved | ||
| dramatically, she still lacked confidence. She took a sewing job and | ||
| then quickly realized she was, in fact, proficient. Thus encouraged, | ||
| she sought an engineering job. In December 2008, Grace was hired | ||
| by a local engineering firm, where she still works today. | ||
| For many, the idea of not being literate includes the stereotypes of | ||
| poverty, drugs or teen pregnancy. This is not always the case. When | ||
| Naomi was in the 11th grade, her mother became ill and Naomi | ||
| dropped out of school to care for her mother. In time, her mother | ||
| healed, but Naomi did not return to school. She married and started a | ||
| day care in her home. Twenty years later, the State laws changed and | ||
| Naomi needed her General Equivalency Diploma (GED) in order to | ||
| continue her day care business. Naomi worked with a tutor until she | ||
| passed all five parts of the GED. She was so encouraged by her | ||
| success that she continued her studies in community college and | ||
| earned an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education. | ||
| DCLC has a particular friend who is helping us | ||
| attain our goal of providing funding for our programs. Doris | ||
| Buffett, founder of the Sunshine Lady Foundation of North | ||
| Carolina, has promised to match, dollar for dollar, any new or | ||
| increased gift to the Literacy Council up to $10,000 - she | ||
| pledged this for the years ending 2010, 2011 and 2012. |
