CAMP ECHO: THE MCGAW YMCA IS A RECOGNIZED LEADER IN NURTURING THE POTENTIAL OF EVERY CHILD AND TEEN EVERY DAY THROUGH PROGRAMS THAT HELP YOUNG PEOPLE DEEPEN POSITIVE VALUES, THEIR COMMITMENT TO SERVICE AND MOTIVATION TO LEARN. CAMP ECHO'S GOAL IS TO OPERATE A FUN, ENGAGING PROGRAM WHILE FOSTERING THE PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL WELL-BEING OF ITS PARTICIPANTS. WE PROMOTE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, CELEBRATE DIVERSITY, ENCOURAGE SERVICE LEARNING AND TEACH OUR TEEN PARTICIPANTS LEADERSHIP SKILLS. DURING OUR SUMMER CAMP IN 2011, WE HAD OVER 1,200 CAMPERS EXPERIENCE CAMP IN 1,358 SESSION SPOTS, THE LARGEST TOTAL EVER. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ADULTS, YOUTH AND PRESCHOOLERS ATTENDING OUR FOUR FAMILY CAMP PROGRAMS WAS OVER 550. AS OF JUNE 30TH, OVER $133,000 WAS PROVIDED TO 171 YOUTH AND 9 FAMILIES WHO RECEIVED FULL OR PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS ALLOWING MORE CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN CAMP PROGRAMMING. RESIDENT MEMBER PROGRAM: DURING FISCAL YEAR 2011 WE SERVED 269 RESIDENT MEMBERS AND AWARDED MORE THAN $78,000 IN FEE ASSISTANCE AND SUBSIDIES TO 47 OF THESE LOW- AND VERY LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS. ON AVERAGE, 90% OF OUR 172 ACOMMODATIONS FOR MEN REMAINED OCCUPIED IN FISCAL YEAR 2011. WE CONTINUE TO EXPAND SERVICES WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT OUR MEMBER RESIDENTS. DURING THE YEAR WE CONDUCTED OUR FIRST FOOD AND WELLNESS WORKSHOP FOR RESIDENT MEMBERS, WITH TOPICS RANGING FROM THE BASICS OF NUTRITION, EATING FOR CERTAIN MEDICAL CONDITIONS, AFFORDABLE AND NUTRITIOUS MEAL OPTIONS AT LOCAL EVANSTON RESTAURANTS, SHOPPING FOR HEALTHY MEALS ON A BUDGET, AND MAKING NUTRITIOUS MEALS WITH A MICROWARE. THE PILOT WORKSHOP WAS CONDUCTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY BANK AND DOWNTOWN EVANSTON, AND WAS SO POPULAR THAT WE HAVE A WAITING LIST FOR FUTURE WORKSHOPS. DAY CAMP: AT THE MCGAW YMCA, WE BUILD STRONG KIDS - STRONG IN CONFIDENCE AND THE CHARACTER-BUILDING VALUES THAT HELP THEM GROW INTO RESPONSIBLE AND CARING YOUTH AND ADULTS. DURING FISCAL YEAR 2011, WE PROVIDED SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS TO CHILDREN FROM AGE 2 THROUGH 8TH GRADE, PROVIDING A FUN FILLED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO MORE THAN 240 CAMPERS, WITH 29% OR 71 CHILDREN RECEIVING FEE ASSISTANCE. CAMP RAINBOW OFFERS FUN AND A LEARNING EXPERIENCE IN A HALF DAY PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN, WHILE CAMP WANAGO, A FULL DAY PROGRAM FOR CAMPERS FROM 1ST TO 5TH GRADE AND THE SUMMER ADVENTURE CLUB, A PROGRAM FOR 6TH TO 8TH GRADE, HELP CAMPERS LEARN LIFE SKILLS IN A SPECIAL COMMUNITY OF FUN AND FRIENDSHIP THAT ONLY CAMP CAN OFFER.
