GROWTH CONTINUED IN 2010 FOR UNITED WAY'S VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, WITH MORE THAN 1,700 PEOPLE MATCHED TO VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FIVE-COUNTY SERVICE AREA. A SMALL FINANCIAL INVESTMENT IN THE PROGRAM, LESS THAN 16,000, REALIZED A RETURN TO THESE COMMUNITIES OF APPROXIMATELY 163,000. NEARLY 8,000 HOURS OF SERVICE WERE PROVIDED BY VOLUNTEERS. VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES RANGED FROM READING AND DISTRIBUTING BOOKS TO CHILDREN IN LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE BOOKS ARE NOT READILY AVAILABLE, TO PARTICIPATION IN DAY OF CARING PROJECTS AND SERVING ON FOCUS GROUP PANELS. THESE VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES PROVIDE A NEEDED AND VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR TIGHT NON-PROFIT BUDGETS, WHILE GIVING CONCERNED CITIZENS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE THEIR TIME AND TALENTS TO HELP IMPROVE OUR COMMUNITIES. (VALUE OF DONATED VOLUNTEER TIME BASED UPON INFORMATION FROM THE INDEPENDENT SECTOR.) THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN IS UNITED WAY'S MAJOR RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY. THIS COMMUNITY-WIDE CAMPAIGN ALLOWS DONORS TO POOL THEIR RESOURCES WITH OTHER CONCERNED COMMUNITY RESIDENTS. UNITED WAY IS COMMITTED TO SETTING PROGRESSIVE AND REALISTIC FUNDRAISING GOALS TO BUILD FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO ADDRESS CRITICAL COMMUNITY NEEDS IN THE SEVEN FOCUS AREAS OF LITERACY, POVERTY, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, DISABILITIES, SENIOR SERVICES, PERSONAL ABUSE AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. REALIZING THAT UNITED WAY IS A LEADER IN BRINGING TOGETHER THE RESOURCES TO BUILD A STRONGER, MORE CARING COMMUNITY, DONORS HAVE THE ADDED ASSURANCE THAT THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS ARE BEING USED TO ENHANCE THE HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES NETWORK THAT COMBATS GAPS IN SERVICES, AND IDENTIFIES NEW AND EMERGING NEEDS.
