| Part II, Line 17b--The society maintains a continuous and bona fide program for solicitation of funds from the general public, foundations, trusts, estates and legacies. The society has a governing board representing the broad interests of the public. The society provides facilities or services directly for the benefit of German immigrants and their descendants on a continuing basis. Continuously from the time it was founded in 1794 until the present day the German Society has had a bona fide program for the solicitation of support from the German public, as well as from foundations, trusts, estates and legacies. This includes dissemination of it's annual reports to many organizations within the German-American community, to the German Language Press and to Germany's Consular representatives. While the circumstances that led to it's formation may seem remote today - improvement of outrageous early immigration procedures and protection and relief from exploitation of German immigrants - the ingenuity and innovative thought of the society's membership and supporters over the years in carrying through it's mission can well be judged by the list of venerable institutions which had their beginnings as part of the Society's welfare program. Notable among these are the Legal Aid Society of New York, The Central Savings Bank, The Isabella Home for the Aged and The Lenox Hill Hospital. The Society has always had a governing board that is representative of the broad interest of the public. Today the Society provides facilities or services directly benefiting German immigrants and their descendants. The Society is a membership organization. The dues of individual members are fixed at rates that make membership easily affordable to the interested public. The activities of the Society have in the past, and continue today, to appeal to a broad common interests and purposes. Throughout it's long history The German Society has numbered among it's membership no fewer than five former mayors of the City of New York: Edward Livingston, Philip Hone (who was the Society's president from 1828-1832), William F. Havemeyer, Daniel F. Tieman C. Godfrey Gunther. When the German Society celebrated the 185th anniversary of it's founding in 1969, before an audience of more than 700 people then New York Attorney General, Louis Lefkowitz eloquently described the dedication and purpose of the Society in the following words " while many worthy private organizations seek the assistance of government, the funds of public agencies to intercede in the solution of their problems, the German Society conducts it's good works on it's own, without recourse to such official bodies. That in itself is rare and good, for we all know that no matter how worthwhile the purpose government lacks the personal attitude and objective approach of the individual in relieving human distress. What officialdom supplies can never equal the quality and purpose and the heart of that which is offered by the individual." |
