What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Promote self-sufficiency among economically disadvantaged populations.
Describe what was achieved in carrying out the organization's exempt purposes. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Zimbabwe Micro-Enterprise: Harambee contributed to permanent improvements in the lives of 4,000 Zimbabweans through community specific training for women and youth. Harambee helped enable them to achieve economic independence by successfully creating small economic enterprises. Harambee community development in Zimbabwe partners with Rotary International, the local government, and local non-profit organizations. Harambee volunteers served vital roles in developing and reviewing the training materials, doing assessments to identify and implement improvement, providing materials and supplies, delivering training and expanding training topics and locations.Harambee created participant manuals, revised existing material and follow-up processes that resulted in significantly improved performance of the trained groups. Harambee funded participant manuals and additional financial training to representatives of all Self Help Groups. With these enhancements the savings of many the Self Help Groups increased over 1,000%. Harambee developed an HIV/AIDS Peer Educator program for women to become facilitators of AIDS related discussions among their peer groups. More than 60 women have been trained through this program and have initiated facilitated discussions with over 600 women. This AIDS awareness program will reduce the transmission of AIDS and will have substantial economic and psychological impact as the incidence of AIDS decreases.Harambee developed and delivered focused business training for women's economic groups in areas such as health and hygiene, business operations. Harambee funded the trainings and provided participant manuals and training material for future sessions. These trainings have increased group confidence and helped increase profits by as much as 100%.Harambee provided support for local Project Officers working with the Self Help Groups including computer equipment, training supplies, cell phones and airtime, transport and other office materials and supplies. Harambee volunteers began recording the results of community specific questionnaires used to establish baseline data and follow-up data collection for measuring the success of training provided in partnership with Rotary International. They also interviewed and documented the impact of training on more than 100 participants. This information is vital for assessing the effectiveness of the training material that Harambee developed and for making changes in the delivery of the training by our partner trainers and creating and implementing new training efforts. This is also essential to measure the success of the work that Harambee is doing. More than 1200 people have participated through 2010 and eventually it will track and document over 4,000 participants.
