What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Today's Youth Matter (TYM) is a 501(C)(3) Nonprofit organization that reaches out to troubled children 8-18 years of age. Over 90% of these children are in the foster care systems of Contra Costa, Alameda and Santa Clara counties in California. TYM started in 1990 primarily as a summer/winter camping organization, but has since added other year-round activities to its program.
Describe what was achieved in carrying out the organization's exempt purposes. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Summer Camp for Children 8-12 yrs old. In 2010, TYM operated six weeks of camp, three for boys and three for girls. Many of our children come from foster and group homes. Others come from low-income, inner city experiences. A week at camp allows each child to actually BE a child since their living situations often force them to live in a world that stifles play and creativity. It costs $330 to fund a child for a 5-day camp.

29 Wilderness Adventure Camping for Teens 13-18 yrs of age. Teens experience a gender separated 4-5 day backpacking expedition in the California Sierra Mountains. They have the opportunity to stretch their abilities and learn new skills -- both hard and soft. Most will have opportunities to explore the capacity of their leadership skills and communication. In the winter months they will take a similar 2-3 day backpack trip, traveling to Sierra Club Huts via snowshoes. Most of our teens live in urban situations, so living in the backcountry with their peers provides life changing experiences and opportunities to build relationships with positive adults.

30 School Year Follow-Up Programs - Whether a child from summer camp or a teen from a wilderness backpack trip, we often hear at the end of a week together, "what's next?" There are a host of structured and small group experiences that take place during the year. The Fall season highlights are: back to school backpacks; HopeFest which serves partly as a reunion for campers and summer staff; Halloween Party & Christmas party. Children & teens join together for many of these large group events. On the smaller group side, we often choose activities requested by our children including: day trips to museums, parks and sporting events. Teens go white-water rafting, camping & on specialized leadership retreats. Winter time is highlighted by Winter Camps. These are 24-hours of pure fun and fellowship. Often youth or young adult groups from Northern California churches will "sponsor" a camp thus providing meals, transportation & a program for the children. A Spring-time highlight is our Walk For Their Future walk-a-thon. This is a large gathering of TYM kids (campers from many years combined), Summer Volunteers & a host of volunteers and supporters of the organization. It has proved to an excellent venue for creating new memories together.

Explanation:
We wrestled this year and last with the changes to Form 990. We will have to file the Full 990 for fiscal year 2011 and suspect that will require even more time. We are looking into whether there are consultants that can assist us so that we can file in Q1 of 2012 for FY 2011.
