United Way engages people in giving back to their community to advance the common good. By bringing together people with passion, expertise and resources, United Way achieves far greater results than any one group can alone. During the past several years, community members prioritized the most important issues facing our County and developed a Road Map for Change. Focused goals were set in the areas of education, income and health -- the building blocks for a good quality of life. United Way is advancing this agenda by working with community partners to set specific goals and action plans to create the desired change. Examples of the outcomes we want to achieve include making sure children succeed in school, reducing relationship violence, and improving financial stability. By focusing on issues and leveraging partnerships and resources, we can effectively and efficiently invest in actions that get results.
4b (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 283,198 including grants of $ 0 ) (Revenue $ 0 )
United Way's 211 is an information and referral service that is here to help answer questions and connect you to services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by phone, through publications, via the online searchable database, or by email. 211 provides information regarding support groups, family counseling, services for an aging parent, financial assistance, volunteer opportunities, other community services and groups and much more. The information and referrals that they provide are free, confidential and personalized.
4c (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 77,808 including grants of $ 0 ) (Revenue $ 0 )
Project Step Up is a United Way pilot program committed to identifying and helping low-income working families make long-term changes in their lives by addressing the underlying issues related to poverty in their individual situations. The program assists families in accomplishing their goals, with links to needed resouces, in a structure of professional and volunteer staffing.
(Code:   ) (Expenses $ 206,534 including grants of $ 0 ) (Revenue $ 0 )
Description: 1. The Volunteer Connection is a non-profit program of the United Way which helps to build community strength through volunteerism by focusing on the following strategies: Effectively connecting volunteers with the opportunity to serve, promoting and fostering volunteerism, and participating in strategic initiatives that mobilize volunteers to meet local needs. > 2. Ready to Read is a partnership managed by United Way of Marathon County. The partnership's shared goal is to increase reading to and with babies and young children. Donated funds from United Way and other grants purchase age appropriate books at discount prices for children age birth to five. Books are then provided free to agency partners that are already serving families with young children, with an emphasis on agencies serving low income families. During visits to programs that they are accessing already, immunization clinics for example, families receive a free, age appropriate book and even more importantly, they receive information about the benefits of reading to their baby or young child. All administrative costs are provided in kind by partner agencies. Ready to Read is a cost effective program managed by United Way. > 3. Women in Action empowers positive change in the lives of others through leadership and involvement in philanthropy, volunteerism and advocacy. Women in Action is about mobilizing women to help other women. By giving, advocating and volunteering. It's a unique opportunity for women who want to help others by joining a giving circle and being part of a powerful network of other active and caring women. > 4. Bundles of Joy is an annual community-wide project that offers individuals and groups the opportunity to volunteer for a fun project and know that their efforts provide essential items for babies and toddlers. This project, new in 2007, used funds raised at the gift wrap center at the local mall, to provide diapers and formula to struggling families in Marathon County. Sponsorship of the gift wrap center by area businesses allowed 100 percent of the proceeds from Bundles of Joy to provide diapers and formula to young families who are walking a financial tightrope. > 5. Emerging Leaders, The LIFE project and the Hunger Coalition were also programs of United Way.
