Hug It Forward's primary exempt purpose is to provide assistance, clothing, shelter and our love to those in need around the world. The principal way we do this is by empowering communities to construct "bottle schools". Bottle schools are schools built out of "waste" plastic bottles and other inorganic trash. Thousands of bottles are collected and stuffed full of inorganic trash such as plastic bags, chip packets and polystyrene until they are hard like bricks. These are known as "eco-bricks". The eco-bricks are stacked one on top of the other, sandwiched between chicken wire on the inside of the walls and outside. The chicken wire helps form the wall, and cement binds to it when applied to the walls to create a smooth stucco finish. This thin yet strong steel/cement material is known as "ferro-cement". The bottles are used solely as insulation; the buildings are supported by professionally built, structurally sound frames, made using reinforced concrete in a tried and tested post-and-beam construction. This method of construction is both eco-friendly and economical, and independent structural analysis has testified to the strength and safety of the buildings. Bottle schools are an efficient and environmentally-friendly way to fill the big need for educational infrastructure that exists in many developing countries while providing a solution for communities that lack waste management systems. Burning trash, littering and improper burial are replaced with a re-utilization of waste as a construction medium. Re-using plastic "waste" to build the schools achieves some very important goals: building a school cheaply and efficiently; cleaning the community of trash; and educating youth about recycling and the environmental impact of our non-biodegradable waste - in the community at large and even in the entire region that the school is being built in. Entire communities in building a bottle school and entire communities are empowered to build a better future for themselves and future generations. In 2010 Hug It Forward enabled 5 communities across Guatemala to build their own bottle school. The community of Sepalau in Chisec, Alta Verapaz completed a three-classroom junior high in April 2010. The community of Chilascó in Baja Verapaz completed a two-classroom elementary school in August 2010. The community of Nueva Reforma in San Rafael Pie de la Cuesta, San Marcos completed a two-classroom elementary school in October 2010. The community of La Cereza, San Carlos Sija, Quetzaltenango completed a one-classroom elementary school in November 2010. The community of Chipocolaj in San Martin Jilotepeque, Chimaltenango completed a two-classroom elementary school in December 2010. For more details and photos of all these bottle schools, together with more information on how bottle schools come together and all the many advantages of this technology, please visit our web site www.hugitforward.org
