What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? The purpose of the Louisiana Assisted Living Association is to advance the assisted living industry through provider education, respond with advocacy on regulatory and legislative issues related to senior living, enhance the quality of life for the consumers served by our member assisted living communities, and serve as a source of information regarding assisted living services in Louisiana.
Describe what was achieved in carrying out the organization's exempt purposes. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Membership Growth & Communication:We welcomed new providers to our LALA family in 2010, representing a total of over 700 assisted living units, and over 10 new Industry Partner members. The Association also provided periodic email updates to members throughout the year on regulatory and legislative topics of interest, and other news of interest to assisted living providers. A Resource to Consumers and Providers: LALA provided educational and resource information regarding assisted living to consumers, the news media and other provider groups. We also provided assistance to our members as needed in resolving regulatory issues, survey deficiencies and resident complaints. Transfer of Regulatory Authority for Assisted Living: During the 2009 Legislative Session, a bill was passed to authorize the transfer of regulatory authority for assisted living (adult residential care facilities) from the Department of Social Services to the Department of Health and Hospitals. LALA worked to have amendments added to this legislation to reflect the intent of the legislature to support the rights of residents, ensuring "freedom of choice, independence, and an opportunity to continue to live as integral members of the community, aging with dignity, privacy, and respect." Since the passage of the bill, LALA representatives have been working in partnership with DHH and DSS to develop recommendations for needed rule revisions and a more streamlined, outcome-focused survey and inspection process.

29 Education: LALA has planned and successfully implemented two educational symposiums that were designed for assisted living owners and top-level administrators. Approximately 100 people attended our Spring Symposium in April which focused on emergency preparedness. Our Summer "Boot Camp" focusing on regulatory compliance topics had over 100 attendees. We partnered with the HomeCare Association of Louisiana to host a two-day educational conference in November that was attended by approx 90 assisted living owners and administrators and more than 100 home care executives. The conference featured a vendor trade show representing over 40 companies that offered products and services geared for assisted living and home care providers. We also conducted a free conference call in June 2010 to educate assisted living providers regarding changes to the criminal background check requirements for staff that were revised as a result of legislation passed during the state legislative session in the spring.
