Briefly describe the organization’s mission: CATHOLIC CHARITIES PROVIDES A NUMBER OF SOCIAL SERVICES TO THE POOR AND NEEDY WHICH INCLUDES COUNSELING, PREGNANCY AND PARENTING SUPPORT, FOSTER CARE, ADOPTION, REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT, FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR BASIC NEEDS, HOUSING ASSISTANCE, ELDERLY SERVICES, YOUTH PROGRAMS, OUTPATIENT SERVICES, HOMELESS SHELTERS, HOUSING ASSISTANCE AS WELL AS OTHER SOCIAL SERVICES.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES IN THE HOME, WHICH MAY ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR AN INDIVIDUAL TO MOVE TO A NURSING HOME. SERVICES INCLUDE:CARE MANAGEMENT, HOME DELIVERED MEALS, NURSING HOME TRANSITION, PERSONAL CARE, RESPITE CARE, FAMILY CAREGIVER SUPPORT, HELP WITH HEALTH INSURANCE, LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM, SUPPORT GROUPS, TRANSPORTATION, AND HOME SUPPORT. CATHOLIC CHARITIES ALSO ADMINISTERS TWO COMMUNITY CENTERS WHERE THEY CAN RECEIVE MEALS, RECREATION ACTIVITIES, EDUCATION PROGRAMMING AND HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAM AND ACTIVITIES WHICH INCLUDES A STATE-OF-THE-ART FITNESS CENTER WITH A FULL-TIME FITNESS EXPERT. CASE MANAGEMENT IS PROVIDED TO PERMANENT HOUSING RESIDENTS WITH THE GOAL OF ASSISTING EACH RESIDENT IN MAINTAINING THEIR INDEPENDENCE UNTIL THEY MUST MOVE TO ASSISTED LIVING, PERSONAL CARE, OR NURSING CARE FACILITIES.

JOSEPH HOUSE OF HOSPITALITY IS A PROGRAM OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE DIOCESE OF PITTSBURGH THAT SERVICES MEN, 50 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER, FROM SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA WHO ARE HOMELESS OR FACED WITH HOMELESSNESS. A MAJORITY OF HOMELESS MEN WHO ARE SERVED HAVE MENTAL ILLNESS OR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, SOME HAVE PROBLEMS STEMMING FROM SUBSTANCE ABUSE, AND OTHERS HAVE BEEN INCARCERATED. DUE TO A LACK OF EDUCATION AND OPPORTUNITY OR DEPRESSED ECONOMIC CONDITIONS, MANY OF ST. JOSEPH'S CLIENTS CANNOT SECURE GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT OR BECOME FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT. ST. JOSEPH'S OFFERS RESIDENTS PERMANENT HOUSING AND TRANSITIONAL HOUSING. IN THE PERMANENT HOUSING PROGRAM, MEN LIVE AT ST. JOSEPH'S AS LONG AS THEY ARE CAPABLE OF INDPENDENT LIVING. RESIDENTS IN PERMANENT HOUSING PROGRAM TYPICALLY LIVE AT ST. JOSEPH'S FOR MORE THAN 24 MONTHS.ST. JOSEPH'S FOOD PROGRAM IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE SERVICE PROVIDED FOR RESIDENTS. ST. JOSEPH'S PREPARES AND SERVES MEALS AT THE SAME TIME EVERYDAY, PROVIDING A DAILY STRUCTURE THAT IS OFTEN LACKING IN THE RESIDENT'S PREVIOUS LIFESTYLE. NUTRITIOUS MEALS SERVED AT THE SAME TIME EVERYDAY IS IMPORTANT IN ESTABLISHING A PATTERN OF STABILITY IN THE LIVES OF ST. JOSEPH'S RESIDENTS. THIS STABILITY IS AN IMPORTANT PREREQUISITE TO HELP RESIDENTS ACHIEVE A LIFE OF SELF-SUFFICIENCY. ST. JOSEPH'S PROVIDES THREE PREPARED MEALS EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR, SERVING AN ESTIMATED 44,000 MEALS ANNUALLY. ST. JOSEPH'S ANTICIPATES SERVING 85 TO 90 MEN IN 2010-2011.CATHOLIC CHARITIES' SAFE HARBOR PROGRAM PROVIDES HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES A SAFE-SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT, ALONG WITH SPECIFIC GOAL DIRECTED INTENSIVE CASE MANAGEMENT AND LIFE SKILLS TRAINING ON A TEMPORARY BASIS. THE STAFF ASSISTS HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN ACQUIRING PERMANENT, AFFORDABLE HOUSING, AS WELL AS MEDICAL, EDUCATIONAL, VOCATIONAL AND SOCIAL SERVICES. THE SAFE HARBOR PROGRAM IS LOCATED ABOVE THE OFFICE OF BUTLER CATHOLIC CHARITIES. IT CONSISTS OF SIX APARTMENTS, ONE THAT IS OCCUPIED BY A RESIDENT MANAGER EMPLOYED THE LIGHTHOUSE FOUNDATION, TWO FAMILY UNITS, AND THREE SINGLE APARTMENTS. THE SINGLE APARTMENTS ARE SEPARATE FROM THE FAMILY UNITS. SAFE HARBOR IS ABLE TO HOUSE APPROXIMATELY 20 PEOPLE AT ANY GIVEN TIME, WITH AN AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY 30-60 DAYS.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES REFUGEE SERVICES PROGRAM HAS HELPED REFUGEES RESETTLE IN THE PITTSBURGH AREA. THE INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHO COME HERE HAVE BEEN FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMELAND AND HAVE SUFFERED CONDITIONS OF WAR AND/OR RACIAL, POLITICAL, OR RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION. REFUGEES RELOCATED IN THE PITTSBURGH AREA HAVE COME FROM SOUTHEAST ASIA, CUBA, AFRICA, HAITI, THE MIDDLE EAST, EASTERN EUROPE, AND THE FORMER SOVIET UNION. WHEN REFUGEES COME TO CATHOLIC CHARITIES THEY ARE MET AT THE AIRPORT BY ONE OF THE STAFF MEMBERS, GIVEN A WARM MEAL, A FULLY FURNISHED APARTMENT, FOOD IN THEIR PANTRIES AND A PERSON THEY CAN RELY UPON TO HELP THEM GET SETTLED INTO THEIR NEW HOME IN AMERICA, AND TO SEEK AND OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT TO BECOME SELF SUFFICIENT. IN ADDITION TO BASIC NEEDS, REFUGEE SERVICES PROVIDES CLIENTS WITH HELPING REGISTERING THEIR CHILDREN IN SCHOOL AND COMPLETING APPLICATIONS FOR ASSISTANCE AND FOOD VOUCHERS UNTIL THEY ARE GAINFULLY EMPLOYED. OTHER SERVICES INCLUDE EMPLOYMENT COUNSELING AND REFERRALS TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING. REFUGEE EMPLOYMENT SERVICES STAFF WORK WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES TO MATCH REFUGEES WITH JOBS. MORE THAN EIGHTY PERCENT OF THE REFUGEES WE SERVE FIND EMPLOYMENT WITHIN THREE MONTHS OF THEIR ARRIVAL. IN FY 2010-2011, THE REFUGEE PROGRAM SERVED OVER 122 INDIVIDUALS FROM COUNTRIES ALL OVER THE WORLD.
