Members enjoy socializing in a fun and comfortable setting. Throughout the year, members and their guests enjoy day outings, luncheons, parties, health screenings, and informational lectures on related health topics. Members also enjoy dining in the hospital cafeteria on meeting days without surcharge.Members of a Gottlieb ENT team travelled to the Dominican Republic for a medical mission. Another Gottlieb team travelled to the Dominican Republic to perform spinal surgeries. Gottlieb donated considerable supplies for the missions.Gottlieb is dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles through its weight loss program which unites physical exercise and medical, nutritional and behavioral education. 12-week weight loss programs are available to community members.Gottlieb's wellness initiative, Inspire Health, promotes the health and wellness of all employees. Care may include medication management, infusion therapy, complex wound care, health teaching, and rehabilitative services. Our team of professionals, consisting of registered nurses, physical, speech and occupational therapists, guide patients and their families through the steps necessary for them to once again gain control of daily activities. A registered nurse is available on call to patients and their families, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. In FY 2011, we provided 18,994 visits. | |
| Part III, Line 4a, continued | Subsidized Health ServicesAdult Day CareThe Gottlieb Adult Day Care is designed to meet the needs of an aging population. Committed to providing high quality person-centered care for older adults with physical, psychosocial or mental impairments, the Center provides clients with the assistance and supervision they need during the day so that they may continue to live at home. Our Adult Day Care staff realizes that while we care for clients during the day, family members take on that responsibility the remainder of the time. With that in mind, we not only serve our clients, but their caregivers as well by providing respite from the daily care of a loved one. The Adult Day Care provides care to 13 to 18 clients a day.The staff works with clients and caregivers to provide social, recreational and healthy activities in a group setting. The overall goal is to maintain or restore each client's optimal level of functioning. In the process, most clients reap the emotional rewards of interaction with their peers and the friendships that result.Transportation ServiceGottlieb offers transportation services to and from the Gottlieb campus. The cost to the rider is minimal and companions ride free. The service is passenger friendly with amenities such as wheelchair accessibility, door-to-door service as well as convenient hours of operation.The total cost of Subsidized Health Services totaled $144,000 for FY 2011.Bad DebtsGottlieb has a formal, written, debt collection policy and our annual operating budget includes patient charges projected to be classified as bad debt. For FY 2011, Gottlieb expensed $7,649,000 attributable to bad debt. This figure exceeded the budgeted amount.Community Education and OutreachGottlieb offers a wide variety of health screenings, educational programs and supports other not-for-profit organizations with missions to provide quality care.Community members are educated abount the programs that Gottlieb offers via the Loyola Living/Gottlieb and You publication. This free publication is mailed to over 170,000 households, three times per year.Gottlieb maintains and staffs a Health Information Resource Center to give patients, their families, the general public, employees and others easy access to health information.Gottlieb is the official site which provides the day's allergy count for the Midwest region during the pollen-reporting allergy season. | Part III, Line 4a, continued | Preventing Disease through Employee VaccinationDuring the 2011 flu season, Gottlieb required all employees with or without direct patient contact to receive the flu vaccination. By requiring vaccination, Gottlieb leads the way in improving safety for patients, visitors, employees and their families.ResearchA pairing of Excellence describes the relationship between Gottlieb and Loyola. This relationship allows our patients to benefit from the clinical trials and research being conducted by Loyola. Delivering advanced treatment through cost-effective results is key to improving the health of all we serve.Charity CareAs part of Gottlieb's mission to provide necessary medical care, regardless of each patient's ability to pay, we absorb the expense of healthcare services we provide without charge.Patients without insurance or other means of paying for care may receive necessary medical free of charge, or at a discount. This care is provided regardless of whether a patient cooperates in a formal process to evaluate financial need. Gottlieb attempts to identify patients who may qualify for charity care even if they do not cooperate with the formal process by researching a patient's financial history through various sources, some of which are publicly available. Patients qualify for charity care based upon federal poverty guidelines. Patients are also assesssed on their ability to pay based on a review of their income in relation to the size of the claim.Each year, our operating budget includes funds to ensure that we allow for the cost of charity care and the provision of care to patients insured by the state Medicaid program. The financial commitment is significant and is an area within the operating budget that continues to grow.Charity care is provided to patients based upon the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Patients are provided substantial discounts if their income is less than 600% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (FPG). Patients who earn up to 200% of the FPG will receive care at no cost. Patients who earn up to 300% of the FPG will receive an 80% discount and patients that earn up to 400% of the FPG will receive a 75% discount. Patients that earn up to 600% of FPG will receive a discount based on cost, reviewed annually. Gottlieb also offers financial assistance in the form of uncompensated care to patients who are unable to pay due to varying circumstances, even if the patients do not provide the information needed to evaluate them under the charity care policy.In FY 2011, total expenses of 2.6 million (at cost) were incurred for charity and uncompensated care.Language Assistance ServicesGottlieb, as part of their normal operating budget, includes provisions for free translation services for the patients it serves. During FY 2011, Gottlieb spent $75,000 in order to provide language assistance.Government Sponsored Indigent Health CareGottlieb incurs additional unreimbursed costs of providing services to Medicare and Medicaid patients. Total hospital Medicare and Medicaid patient days in FY 2011 were 29,982 and 4,220, respectively. The programs supporting Medicare and Medicaid patients continue to grow in response to the demand in the surrounding community. | Part III, Line 4a, continued | Gottlieb Hospice provides palliative care to terminally ill patients during the last six months of life. An interdisciplinary team consisting of the patient's attending physician, registered nurses, aides, dietitians, medical social workers, chaplains and volunteers work together to support comfort and quality of life. Hospice services are provided primarily in the patient's place of residence and facility-based acute inpatient and respite level are provided as needed. A structured program of bereavement follow up is provided to all families during the year following the patient's death. Gottlieb Hospice also offers a series of grief support groups and memorial service at no charge for the community throughout the year. In FY 2011, terminally ill patients received 2,173 visits from our staff.Geriatric Behavorial Health CareResponding to the growing geriatric need in the Chicagoland area, Gottlieb's Geriatric Behavioral Health Care Unit is a 12-bed, Medicare certified service designed to diagnose and treat the complex problems related to individuals 65 years of age and older. Because the aging process often causes many physical, emotional and cognitive challenges for older adults, these challenges may lead to depression and isolation, anxiety, physical and emotional adjustments, issues with substance abuse and the lack of appropriate nutrition. Our medical and clinical professionals provide a team approach to develop individualized treatment plans based on comprehensive diagnostic procedures to help improve the quality of life of those facing these challenges.Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine CenterOffering hope to patients with chronic wounds that are difficult to heal, the Gottlieb Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Center leads the way in low days-to-heal rates putting Gottlieb in the top tier of wound-care centers in the country. The Center provides individualized, comprehensive plans for care and advanced therapies, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy. We are members of a hospital cooperative system which provides emergency support to communities outside our traditional service area. Emergencies can arise at any time and we continuously work to mitigate the risks which could unexpectedly disrupt service.A multidisciplinary committee, including members from our executive team, nurse specialist, nurse manager and directors of purchasing and information technology provide continuing education to the entire hospital and its medical staff in case of an emergency.
