| Part I, line 12 Income exceeds expense due to multi-year renovation and expansion campaign that also partially funded operating reserves during three-year pledge payout phase. Renovation of 22,000 square feet of program space brought aging building up-to-code, increased program- building capacity, and allowed relocation of offices to program site in the neighborhood served. Part III, Line II The following program services are of comparable or greater importance than the Academic Enrichment Program although smaller in terms of expenses: The housing initiative is administered by a housing director who utilizes volunteers and partnerships with landlords, residents and outside agencies to work toward stabilizing neighborhood families through housing In 2011, 110 volunteers logged 1,024 hours in neighborhood cleanup, landscaping and home repairs. Spiritual Development is administered by staff and includes one-on-one mentoring and oversight of AEP Bible curriculum and training in its use. In addition, an adult Bible study as well as resident-led small groups impact 65 residents weekly. Christmas Store helps impoverished residents provide for their own children in a developmental way. Staff and volunteers create a fully functioning store exclusively for the neighborhood with over 2,000 new, donated items priced 75 percent off their retail value. In 2011, 1,607 gifts were sold to benefit 257 children from 95 families. Ninety children also shopped for their parents in a separate store. Three hundred volunteers made it happen through 640 hours of labor providing marketing, toy collection,registration,set-up,pricing,assistant shoppers, checkout and wrapping. Community gatherings build a sense of community in this marginalized neighborhood. Parker Street Ministris partnered with volunteers from inside and outside the neighborhood to host Easter Egg Hunt, Summer Splash and Fall Festival. Over 200 residents attended each event where they enjoyed games, fellowship and free meals. In 2011, 433 hours were logged by 132 volunteers at community gatherings. Volunteers are vital resources for program delivery. In 2011, 645 individuals logged over 5,000 hours while participating in 1,400 volunteer experiences. As advocates for the poor, PSM staff contextualize volunteer experiences by training about specific tasks as well as related aspects of urban ministry. Volunteers leave the experience better understanding their fit in the total work, the plight of at-risk people, and their responsibility to help in a developmental way. Policies and procedures are in place for volunteers in the academic program including background checks for adults.
