"TALKING TO THE FUTURE" BRINGS INDUSTRY LEADERS TOGETHER WITH STUDENTS INTERESTED IN TECHNOLOGY CAREERS TO DISCUSS THE REALITIES OF THE TECH INDUSTRY AND TO ENGAGE IN HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES RELATED TO REAL-WORLD CHALLENGES FACED BY THOSE AT THE FOREFRONT OF TECHNOLOGY TODAY. RICH HILLEMAN, CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER OF ELECTRONIC ARTS, INC., INAUGURATED THE SERIES IN SEPTEMBER, 2011. AS ONE EXPRESSION OF THE MUSEUM'S MISSION TO INSPIRE INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY IN THE NEXT GENERATION OF COMPUTER USERS AND INNOVATORS, THE MUSEUM PRESENTS AND PARTICIPATES IN EVENTS FOR FAMILIES AND STUDENT GROUPS. IN 2011, THIS INCLUDED DOCENT DEMONSTRATIONS OF MUSEUM ARTIFACTS AT THE AT&T PARK DISCOVERY DAY AS PART OF THE BAY AREA SCIENCE FESTIVAL, AND AT A SCIENCE FESTIVAL AT A LOCAL K-5 MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE MAGNET SCHOOL. THE MUSEUM UTILIZES ADULT VOLUNTEERS TO ACT AS DOCENTS FOR MOST OF OUR ONSITE TEACHING. DOCENTS ARE TRAINED IN PEDAGOGICAL BEST PRACTICES FOR INFORMAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND ARE PREPARED WITH DEVELOPMENTAL INFORMATION AND LEARNING THEORY TO ALLOW THEM TO TEACH ABOUT COMPUTER HISTORY IN AGE- AND GRADE-APPROPRIATE WAYS. INITIAL TRAINING INVOLVES SEVERAL HUNDRED HOURS OF DOCENT-CANDIDATE WORK, INCLUDING OVER 60 HOURS OF FORMAL, STAFF-LED TRAINING AT THE MUSEUM. HANDS-ON CONTINUING EDUCATION SESSIONS ARE CONDUCTED MONTHLY, TO ENSURE THAT DOCENT SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE ARE KEPT CURRENT.
