	In FY 2011-12,CWPA expanded the squid field research program, chartering a dedicated vessel to conduct quarterly surveys. The Association again mounted an extensive post-season survey of squid spawning/fishing grounds after the season closed. CWPA also signed a research Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Fish and Game, officially recognized as a research partner.CWPA continued to participate actively in the South Coast MLPA initiative process, resulting in an outcome that spared important fishing grounds from closure in marine reserves.CWPA helped to secure interim exemption for fishing vessels from requirement to obtain pollution discharge permits, and also submitted comments on the federal proposed rule requiring NPDES permits in the future.CWPA's executive director defended existing fishery management at the Legistlaure to thwart a bill that sought to restrict wetfish "forage" fisheries in California. CWPA representatives on the CPS Advisory Subpanel also make recommendations to federal fishery managers regarding annual catch limits for CPS.CWPA communicated with leglslative committees as well as Congressional representatives, federal agencies, state DFG and the Fish & Game Commission on issues of concern to the wetfish industry in 2011-12.CWPA continued and expanded a website to encourage more direct and open communication to members and the public. CWPA also maintained a public information blog - Fishing News - to promote good news about California wetfish and cover topics of general interest about fishery management issues.
