What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH & BETWEEN FAMILIES & CHILDREN OF INCARCERATED PERSONS, TO MINISTER TO INCARCERATED ADULTS & JUVENILES, PROVIDING THEM WITH LIFE-SKILLS TRAINING AND EDUCATION TO ENABLE THEM TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES IN THEIR LIVES.

28 BUILDING ASSETS: AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM TEACHING LIFE SKILLS TO AT-RISK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN. BEGINNING IN 2009 AS A PILOT PROGRAM IN ONE SCHOOL, THE PROGRAM HAS EXPANDED TO SIX SCHOOLS AT THE INVITATION OF THE LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT. THE PROGRAM FOCUSES ON EDUCATING AND SUPPLYING CHILDREN OF INCARCERATED PARENTS, AND OTHER AT-RISK CHILDREN, WITH THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO BUILD SELF-ESTEEM, EASE FEELINGS OF SHAME AND ISOLATION, DECREASE STRESS, ADDRESS ANGER ISSUES, AND STRENGTHEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN A SAFE AND CARING ATMOSPHERE WITH TRAINED STAFF. 100 AT-RISK CHILDREN WERE HELPED IN 2011.

PRACTICAL METHODS ARE TAUGHT THAT FAMILIES CAN USE TO INSTILL VALUES AND COMPETANCIES IN THEIR CHILDREN'S LIVES. PROGRAM TOPICS INCLUDE ORGANIZATION AND GOAL-SETTING, PARENTING SKILLS, MANAGING MONEY, CONFLICT RESOLUTION, AVOIDING RISKY BEHAVIORS, JOB SEARCH AND JOB MAINTENANCE SKILLS. A FAMILY MEAL IS SHARED AND ACTIVIITES ARE PROVIDED FOR YOUNG CHILDREN SO THE PARENTS ARE FREE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM. (THE ACTIVITIES FOR THE CHILDREN ARE ALSO DESIGNED TO REINFORCE THE SKILLS AND VALUES BEING TAUGHT.) IN 2011, 1,476 MEALS WERE SERVED TO ADULTS AND CHLDREN WHO ATTENDED PROGRAMS, HELD AT THE ROSWELL BOYS & GIRLS CLUB. THUS FAR OVER 1,000 BACKPACKS HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED, ALONG WITH GIFTS FOR CHILDREN TOO YOUNG TO ATTEND SCHOOL. A CHRISTMAS PARTY IS ALSO HELD, WITH THE SAME FORMAT: SONGS & STORIES, GIFTS, AND REFRESHMENTS. IN 2011, OVER 200 HOME-BAKED COOKIES WERE DECORATED (AND EATEN) BY YOUNG (AND NOT-SO-YOUNG) GUESTS IN ATTENDANCE. MOST WINGS VOLUNTEERS ARE MOTIVATED BY GOD'S CALL TO SERVE HIS CHILDREN, BUT ONLY THESE ANNUAL WINGS PARTIES ARE FAITH-BASED PROGRAMS, AND INCLUDE BIBLE STORIES AND TESTIMONY. FUNDING FOR THESE PARTIES IS DRAWN EXCLUSIVELY FROM INDIVIDUAL AND CORPORATE DONATIONS, NOT FROM ANY GOVERNMENT GRANTS.

FSTR (FIRST STEPS TOWARD REUNIFICATION): IN COLLABORATION WITH CHILDREN'S COURT, EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY'S HUMAN SERVICES STUDIES DEPARTMENT, THE STATE CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILIES DEPARTMENT, AND OTHER LOCAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, THIS PROGRAM REQUIRES PARENTS WHO HAVE LOST CUSTODY OF THEIR CHILDREN IN ABUSE AND NEGLECT CASES TO PARTICIPATE IN A DAY-LONG TRAINING AND INTERACTIVE PRESENTATION WITH AGENCY AND COMMUNITY RESOURCE PROVIDERS. THE PROGRAM IS OFFERED EVERY SIX WEEKS TO ALL NON-INCARCERATED PARENTS IN NEW ABUSE AND NEGLECT CASES WHO ARE ORDERED TO ATTEND. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN HELPING PARENTS BEGIN THEIR TREATMENT PLANS BEFORE ADJUDICATION SO THAT THEY CAN REDIRECT THEIR LIVES. GRADUATES OF THE PROGRAM ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND WINGS FOR L.I.F.E PROGRAMS ON A CONTINUING BASIS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THEIR FAMILY LIFE, AND THE ENVIRONMENT FOR THEIR CHILDREN.
