ORGANIZATION'S MISSION
FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION
THE BLAINE COUNTY HUNGER COALITION STRIVES TO END HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING WHOLESOME FOOD TO THOSE IN NEED AND BY PROMOTING SOLUTIONS TO THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF HUNGER THROUGH COLLABORATION, EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY.
EXPLANATION ON VOLUNTEERS AND TYPES OF SERVICES OR BENEFITS
FORM 990, PAGE 1, PART I, LINE 6
THE BLAINE COUNTY HUNGER COALITION BENEFITED FROM A TOTAL OF 6080 VOLUNTEER HOURS IN 2011. VOLUNTEERS COLLECT, SORT, WEIGH, TRACK AND DISTRIBUTE FOOD FOR THE MOBILE FOOD BANK PROGRAM. THEY STUFF AND DELIVER BACKPACKS FOR THE BACKPACK PROGRAM. THEY TEACH CLIENTS BASIC COMPUTER, NUTRITION AND LIFE SKILLS THROUGH OUR MENTORING & EDUCATION PROGRAMS. THEY HELP TRACK THE AMOUNT OF FOOD COLLECTED AND DISTRIBUTED, AND THE NUMBER OF VOLUNTEER HOURS DONATED WEEKLY. THEY HOLD FOOD DRIVES AND HELP WITH FUNDRAISING AND AWARENESS EVENTS.
FIRST ACCOMPLISHMENT DESCRIPTION
FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A
OF OUR MOBILE FOOD BANK PROGRAM. THESE ADDITIONAL SOURCES OF FRESH PRODUCE CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO THE INCREASED NUTRITIONAL INTAKE OF OUR COMMUNITYS HUNGRY. 1. MOBILE FOOD BANK IN ITS THIRD YEAR, THE MOBILE FOOD BANK PROGRAM DISTRIBUTED THE EQUIVALENT OF 142,283 MEALS WORTH OF ESSENTIAL SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION TO LOCAL FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCING HUNGER. FOR THE 210 CHILDREN AND ADULTS RECEIVING FOOD ASSISTANCE WEEKLY, WE WERE ABLE TO PURCHASE OVER 52,200 POUNDS OF ADDITIONAL FRESH & NON-PERISHABLE FOOD FOR A MERE 0.19 PER POUND. WITH MORE THAN 150 VOLUNTEERS DONATING OVER 5,300 HOURS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, OUR COMBINED SAVINGS IN FOOD AND LABOR COSTS REACHED NEARLY 350,000. CHILDREN REPRESENTED 45% OF THE ASSISTANCE GIVEN, AND OF THOSE 35% WERE NEWBORN TO FIVE YEARS OF AGE. OF SERVICE RECIPIENTS, 64% WERE LATINO, 35% WERE CAUCASIAN AND 1% WERE OF OTHER ETHNICITY. 2. EMPOWERMENT SERVICES IN KEEPING WITH OUR STATED MISSION, WE ACTIVELY ADDRESS THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF HUNGER AND PROMOTE LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS THROUGH COLLABORATION, ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION. ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED TO SUPPORT OUR MOBILE FOOD BANK PROGRAM, OUR EMPOWERMENT SERVICES EXPANDED DURING 2011 TO BECOME THE FOUNDATION FOR CLIENT RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND LED TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF OUR MENTORING AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS. CLIENT RESOURCE STAFF MET PRIVATELY WITH AN AVERAGE OF 40 CLIENT FAMILIES A MONTH, OFFERED AN INDIVIDUAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT, INTRODUCED ADDITIONAL FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS, CONNECTED THEM WITH COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND INVITED THEM TO PARTICIPATE IN EMPOWERMENT AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. 3. BACKPACK CLUB INITIATED IN 2008, THE BACKPACK CLUB IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO FEED HUNGRY STUDENTS OVER THE WEEKENDS WHEN THEY ARE OUTSIDE THE SAFETY NET OF THE SCHOOL MEALS PROGRAM. PROGRAM-SPECIFIC FOOD ORDERS PROVIDE HEALTHY, SHELF-STABLE, EASY TO PREPARE FOOD THAT CHILDREN TAKE HOME AT THE END OF EVERY WEEK TO SUPPLEMENT THEIR OVERALL NUTRITION ON THE WEEKENDS AND AFTER SCHOOL. THE 20102011 SCHOOL YEAR EXPERIENCED ANOTHER YEAR OF INCREASED ENROLLMENT THROUGH EACH OF THE AREA'S EIGHT PARTICIPATING PUBLIC SCHOOLS, FINISHING WITH A HIGH OF 145 STUDENTS PER WEEK COMPARED TO 136 STUDENTS IN THE PRIOR SCHOOL YEAR. FOR FISCAL YEAR 2011, THE HUNGER COALITION DISTRIBUTED A TOTAL OF 4,165 BACKPACKS, AN INCREASE OF 150 TOTAL PACKS COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS FISCAL YEAR. 4. SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM IN ITS FOURTH YEAR, THIS COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE HUNGER COALITION AND THE BLAINE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT SERVED A TOTAL OF 5,138 FREE HOT BREAKFASTS AND LUNCHES TO LOCAL CHILDREN AGES 0 -18. THE LUNCH CONNECTION RAN FOR TEN WEEKS BEGINNING ON JUNE 13 AND ENDING ON AUGUST 19. COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS ALSO OFFERED KID-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES TO ENCOURAGE ATTENDANCE. IN ADDITION TO OFFER OF FREE MEALS TO KIDS, ADULTS WERE ABLE TO PURCHASE A MEAL FOR BETWEEN 1,75 - 3.25. TO DATE THE LUNCH CONNECTION HAS DISTRIBUTED A TOTAL OF 23,407 FREE MEALS SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2008. 5. INFANT FORMULA INITIATIVE WE BEGAN OUR INFANT FORMULA INITIATIVE AT THE END OF 2005 IN RESPONSE TO REPORTS FROM PUBLIC HEALTH AND OTHER COMMUNITY AGENCIES THAT MANY FAMILIES WERE EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTY IN PROVIDING SUFFICIENT NOURISHMENT FOR THEIR INFANTS. WHILE MANY NEW MOTHERS QUALIFY FOR GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES OF FORMULA, THE AMOUNT PROVIDED IS NOT ALWAYS SUFFICIENT TO MEET THE NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF THEIR NEW BABIES. THIS SERVICE PROVIDES VITAL NUTRITION AND NOURISHMENT TO INFANTS WHO WOULD OTHERWISE BE AT SERIOUS RISK OF EXPERIENCING CHRONIC HUNGER. THE TRAGIC IMPLICATIONS OF HUNGER IN INFANCY INCLUDE GROWTH RETARDATION, DECREASED RESISTANCE TO INFECTIONS AND DISEASE, IMPAIRED LEARNING ABILITY AND INCREASED MORTALITY. AS THESE CHILDREN GROW, THE EFFECTS OF EARLY HUNGER CAN AFFECT THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE, AT A COST MUCH GREATER THAN THAT OF PREVENTION. THIS PROGRAM IS NOT AN ONGOING SOURCE OF ASSISTANCE FOR A FAMILY. IT FILLS A CRUCIAL NEED IN THE LIVES OF THE MOST VULNERABLE MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY. IN 2011 WE PROVIDED THE EQUIVALENT OF OVER 2,300 BOTTLES OF INFANT FORMULA, GIVING OUT MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED FIFTY 12.5 OUNCE CANS OF FORMULA TO SUPPLEMENT INFANTS NUTRITIONAL LEVELS.
