	National program outreach to like-minded organizations such as the Black Trade Unionists and leaders in communities where APRI chapters are located. APRI's civic engagement program works to increase black participation in the political process. Within our communities, APRI is involved in breast cancer awareness, healthcare advocacy, community service projects and alliances with local policy makers. By boosting the political impact of black voters and increasing black participation in labor's base support, APRI has become a leading voice on economic, political and industrial policy affecting all American workers. APRI also works to develop black leadership in the trade union movement. Black labor leaders are important to the trade union movement, to local communities and to our nation. Black labor leaders and community activists regularly turn to the Institute for training and networking contacts. APRI members serve in state legislatures, school boards, city councils, local and international unions and governmental and community leadership.

	The APRI Education Conference serves as a mechanism to strengthen constituient leadership and support relationship building among APRI leaders in order to increase the presence of trade unionists in the black community. The Conference also serves as a platform to educate APRI members about national policies which have a direct impact on the black community. For example, in the past three years, APRI's National Education Conference has aggressively focused on health advocacy and healthcare reform to establish practices and implement programs to insure that the issue of race-based healthcare disparities was placed squarely on the nation's agenda.
