THE KENOSHA LITERACY COUNCIL'S MISSION IS TO "PROVIDE AND PROMOTE LITERACY EDUCATION IN ENGLISH TO ADULTS IN KENOSHA COUNTY WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF TRAINED VOLUNTEERS".
FIRST ACHIEVEMENT
FORM 990-EZ, PART III, LINE 28
CITIZENSHIP CLASS - THE COUNCIL OFFERS CITIZENSHIP CLASSES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO HELP ADULTS PREPARE FOR THE NATURALIZATION PROCESS. EACH GROUP OF CLASSES BEGINS WITH AN OVERVIEW OF THE NATURALIZATION PROCESS AND IS FOLLOWED WITH AN EIGHT-WEEK SERIES OF CLASSES THAT PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE N-400 FORM, INTERVIEW, AND CIVICS TEST.
SECOND ACHIEVEMENT

ADULT LEARNER SUPPORT - THE COUNCIL PROVIDES BOTH ESL (ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE) AND ABE (ADULT BASIC EDUCATION) EDUCATIONAL SERVICES. ESL SERVICES ARE FOR LEARNERS WHOSE NATIVE LANGUAGE IS NOT ENGLISH. ABE SERVICES ARE FOR NATIVE-ENGLISH SPEAKING ADULTS WHO WANT TO IMPROVE THEIR READING, WRITING, AND MATH SKILLS. KLC SERVED 615 STUDENTS FROM 34 COUNTRIES - A 35% INCREASE FROM LAST FISCAL YEAR. 62% OF ADULT LEARNERS WHO COMPLETED AT LEAST 60 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION INCREASED THEIR ENGLISH LITERACYC LEVEL BY ONE AS MEASURED BY STANDARDIZED PRE AND POST TESTS. 40% OF ADULT LEARNERS WHO PARTICIPATED FOR MORE THAN SIX MONTHS, FOUND EMPLOYMENT AND/OR ENROLLED AT GATEWAY TECHNICAL COLLEGE.
THIRD ACHIEVEMENT

TUTOR TRAINING AND SUPPORT - THE COUNCIL PROVIDES TRAINING TO THOSE VOLUNTEERING THEIR TIME TO HELP EDUCATE THE ADULT LEARNERS. ONE ON ONE TUTORING IS WHERE STUDENTS WORK PRIVATELY WITH A VOLUNTEER TUTOR TO IMPROVE READING AND ENGLIDH LANGUAGE SKILLS. STUDENT AND TUTOR WORK TOWARD MEETING PERSONAL LITERACY GOALS THAT INCLUDE EMPLOYMENT AND LIFE SKILLS. DROP IN TUTORING IS PROVIDED IN THE KLC LEARNING LAB. STUDENTS MEET AT SCHEDULED TIMES WITH VOLUNTEER TUTORS WHO ARE THERE TO HELP WITH ASSIGNED WORK. LAST FISCAL YEAR, LITERACY EDUCATION SERVICES WERE PROVIDED BY NEARLY 200 VOLUNTEER TUTORS.
