NWP IS A NETWORK OF NEARLY 200 UNIVERSITY-BASED SITES SERVING ALL 50 STATES, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, PUERTO RICO, AND THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS. CO-DIRECTED BY FACULTY FROM THE LOCAL UNIVERSITY AND K-12 SCHOOLS, EACH NWP SITE DEVELOPS A LEADERSHIP CADRE OF TEACHERS THROUGH AN INVITATIONAL SUMMER INSTITUTE, AND DESIGNS AND DELIVERS CUSTOMIZED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS IN THE TEACHING OF WRITING FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS, DISTRICTS, AND HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS. EACH YEAR NWP TRAINS 3,000 NEW TEACHER-LEADERS, ENGAGES WITH ANOTHER 120,000 EDUCATORS ACROSS THE U.S., AND, THROUGH THOSE EDUCATORS, REACHES 1.4 MILLION STUDENTS. OVER THE 37 YEARS OF ITS DEVELOPMENT, THE NWP HAS CREATED A SIGNATURE MODEL OF INQUIRY-DRIVEN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT INCLUDES EXAMINING BEST PRACTICES, ENGAGING IN THE DISCIPLINE UNDER STUDY, DEVELOPING STRATEGIES TO MEET THE LITERACY NEEDS OF INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS, AND LEARNING FROM RESEARCH IN THE FIELD. NWP PROGRAMS CONTRIBUTE TO GROWTH IN STUDENT WRITING ACHIEVEMENT. OVER THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, NWP HAS CONDUCTED A COORDINATED PROGRAM OF 18 WRITING PROJECT SITE RESEARCH STUDIES TO EXAMINE THE IMPACT OF ITS WORK ON TEACHERS' CLASSROOM PRACTICE AND STUDENT WRITING PERFORMANCE. RESULTS FROM INDEPENDENT NATIONAL SCORINGS OF STUDENT WRITING ACROSS THESE DIFFERENT QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES SHOW THAT NWP STUDENTS' IMPROVEMENT OUTPACES THAT OF STUDENTS IN COMPARISON GROUPS IN 17 OF THE 18 STUDIES.
