SREB'S SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVES, HIGH SCHOOLS THAT WORK (HSTW) AND TECHNOLOGY CENTERS THAT WORK (TCTW) UTILIZE NATIONAL ASSESSMENT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM-LIKE ASSESSMENTS TO INFORM SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS. IN EVEN- NUMBERED YEARS, ALL HSTW AND TCTW SITES PARTICIPATE IN THE HSTW ASSESSMENT, WHICH INCLUDE SUBJECT TESTS IN READING, MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE, AND A STUDENT AND TEACHER SURVEY. PARTICIPATING SITES RECEIVE A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL-LEVEL REPORT THAT DISAGGREGATES STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT BY THEIR PERCEPTIONS OF SCHOOL AND CLASSROOM PRACTICES. IN FY2011-12 OVER 40,000 TWELFTH-GRADE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE HSTW ASSESSMENT FROM 718 HIGH SCHOOLS IN 32 STATES. ALL SENIORS WHO PARTICIPATED RECEIVED A STUDENT READINESS REPORT DETAILING THEIR PERFORMANCE. ADDITIONALLY OVER 9,000 SENIORS QUALIFIED FOR AND RECEIVED THE HSTW AWARD OF EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. SREB'S MIDDLE GRADES INITIATIVE, MAKING MIDDLE GRADES WORK (MMGW) UTILIZES AN ONLINE SURVEY FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. IN FY2011-12, OVER 35,000 EIGHTH-GRADE STUDENTS AND 8,000 TEACHERS FROM 280 SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED IN THE SURVEYS. SCHOOLS RECEIVED SEPARATE REPORTS OF THEIR RESULTS FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS.

SREB WORKED WITH NINE HIGH SCHOOLS IN ARKANSAS TO IMPLEMENT THE NEW MATH- BY-DESIGN (MDC) THIS YEAR, AND EIGHT HIGH SCHOOLS TO IMPLEMENT LITERACY- BY-DESIGN (LDC WORK). TWELVE SREB LDC AND 12 LDC TRAINERS TRAINED 40 STATE/DISTRICT LDC AND 30 MDC TRAINERS. THESE TRAINERS WORKED WITH 32 LDC TEACHER FACILITATORS, AND 16 MDC TEACHER FACILITATORS. IN LDC, 88% OF TEACHER FACILITATORS IMPLEMENTED TWO TO FOUR MODULES. IN MDC, 100% OF TEACHER FACILITATORS IMPLEMENTED 3 FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT LESSONS (FALS) AND 62% IMPLEMENTED 5 FALS. BASED ON PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK AND OBSERVATION, LEAD TEACHER FACILITATORS HAVE BEGUN TO SHARE LDC WITH OTHER TEACHERS ON THEIR CAMPUS. AN ADDITIONAL 40 TEACHERS HAVE BEEN FORMALLY BROUGHT INTO THE LDC PROJECT AT THE EIGHT ORIGINAL SCHOOL SITES. ONE DISTRICT HELD A LEADERSHIP FORUM WITH 20 PRINCIPALS FROM SURROUNDING SCHOOLS TO DISCUSS THE SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF LDC AND MDC. 120 SCHOOLS ARE ON TRACK TO COME ON-LINE IN 2012-13.SREB ASSISTED FIVE MEMBER STATES IN DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING STATEWIDE 12TH GRADE MATHEMATICS AND LITERACY COURSES TO SUPPORT STUDENTS' COLLEGE READINESS. SREB ALSO WORKED WITH 16 MEMBER STATES ON STRATEGIES TO INCREASE COLLEGE COMPLETION AND HELD THREE MEETINGS WITH POLICY AND EDUCATION LEADERS ON COMPLETION-RELATED ISSUES. THE FIRST CONVENED 50 LEGISLATORS, SHEEO AND STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION LEADERS TO DISCUSS THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF STATE POLICY ON COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS AND OUTCOMES-BASED FUNDING. A REGIONAL FOCUS GROUP OF 38 INDIVIDUALS FROM THE SREB STATES CONVENED TO DISCUSS TRANSFER, CREDITS AND TIME TO DEGREE, AND ACCELERATED OPTIONS. THE THIRD MEETING ENGAGED OVER 50 MEMBERS OF SREB'S LEGISLATIVE ADVISORY COUNCIL, LEGISLATIVE WORK CONFERENCE AND BOARD TO FINALIZE DISCUSSIONS ON POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS RELATED TO CREDIT ACCRUAL AND TIMELY COMPLETION.

WITH A THEME OF "ENGAGING STUDENTS INTELLECTUALLY, EMOTIONALLY, SOCIALLY AND BEHAVIORALLY IN LEARNING", THIS CONFERENCE FEATURED OVER 700 SESSIONS LED BY INVITING GUEST SPEAKERS, TEACHERS AND SCHOOL LEADERS WHO RAISE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT BY ENGAGING STUDENTS IN LEARNING.
