CHILDREN COME TO THE LAUNCH PAD CENTER TWO AFTERNOONS A WEEK FOR HEALTHY SNACKS, HELP WITH HOMEWORK, TUTORING, SPIRITUAL FORMATION, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, LIFE SKILLS GUIDANCE, BUDGET/BANKING TRAINING, CRAFTS, AND A VARIETY OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES. EACH CHILD IS ASSIGNED AN ADULT MENTOR WHOM HE/SHE REMAINS IN A MENTORING RELATIONSHIP WITH THROUGH THE 5TH GRADE, AND OFTEN BEYOND. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR CIUDAD NUEVA ORGANIZES EVENTS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, SUCH AS THE FALL FESTIVAL, BOTH ON ITS OWN AND IN CONJUNCTION WITH DOWNTOWN EL PASO CHURCHES. THESE EVENTS ARE DESIGNED AS FUN ACTIVITIES THAT PROVIDE SPACE FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER AND CONNECT WITH MEMBERS OF THE CHURCHES IN THE DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY. COMMUNITY ADVOCACY - FANUC (FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS UNITED COMMITTEE) IN 2006 CIUDAD NUEVA JOINED FORCES WITH SIX NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS TO FORM FANUC, IN ORDER TO ADVOCATE FOR THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY REGARDING PARKS, ROAD IMPROVEMENTS, NEIGHBORHOOD SECURITY, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LOCAL COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER. THE GOAL OF BRINGING A RECREATION CENTER INTO THE NEIGHBORHOOD WAS ACCOMPLISHED AS THE CITY HAS PURCHASED PROPERTY AND RENOVATED IT INTO A PARKS AND RECREATION COMMUNITY CENTER. THE NEW "PAT O'ROURKE RECREATION CENTER" OPENED ITS DOORS AT THE END OF 2010. DOWNTOWN CONNECTION IN 2005 CIUDAD NUEVA STAFF BEGAN TO MEET REGULARLY WITH A FEW LEADERS FROM DOWNTOWN CHURCHES TO DISCUSS OUTREACH IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THESE MEETINGS HAVE EVOLVED OVER TIME INTO THE DOWNTOWN CONNECTION, A LOOSE COALITION OF MULTI-DENOMINATIONAL CHURCHES AND FAITH-BASED ENTITIES FOCUSED ON JOINTLY REACHING OUT TO THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. FORTY INDIVIDUALS REPRESENTING 25+ CHURCHES/AGENCIES ARE CURRENTLY INVOLVED IN THE DOWNTOWN CONNECTION. MANY COMMUNITY EVENTS ARE JOINTLY ORGANIZED THROUGH MEMBERS. MEMBERS HAVE HOSTED HEALTH FAIRS, NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUPS, CLOTHES CLOSETS, FEEDING PROGRAMS, YOUTH PROGRAMS, NEIGHBORHOOD PROGRAMS AND TEMPORARILY HOUSED THE HOMELESS.
