Identifier Return Reference Explanation
SchI_P01_S00_L02 Schedule I, Part I, Line 2 Schedule I, Part I, Line 2 - Assistance decisions are based upon a family's ability to pay for the cost of education. Parents are expected to contribute toward tuition charges up to the extent they are capable, and we expect all families will contribute some portion of the cost of their child's education. ULS uses the services of The School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS), in Princeton New Jersey, to determine the parents' expected contribution toward tuition charges. Families applying for aid must file a Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) with SSS. In making a FA award, ULS reviews the Report of Financial Need which is provided by SSS, alters its determination where appropriate and attempts to fund a significant portion of the difference between tuition and the parents' expected contribution. FA awards carry no obligation to be repaid by the family receiving the award. Students on financial assistance are expected, like all students at ULS, to maintain a high academic average, to be good citizens of the school community, and to contribute to the school's extracurricular activities. FA is awarded on a yearly basis and families must file a PFS every year they desire assistance. Purposes of the Financial Assistance Program (FAP): To support the mission of the school in attracting a diverse and talented student body;To enhance the school's environment by enabling students from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds to enroll; To assist families with the increasing burden of tuition for two or more children; To make it possible for ULS to seek out prospective students of the greatest potential and promise Eligibility for FA Awards a) Candidates must meet all admission requirements and be approved by the admission committee without regard to economic status. b) Established financial need, as shown by the SSS application and most recent 1040 tax return. c) Students entering grades six through 12 are eligible to apply for financial assistance. Families with students in lower grades may apply if temporary or extenuating circumstances dictate financial need. d) Candidates should possess the personal qualifications that predict a satisfactory social adjustment to ULS and an ability and desire to use the school's preparation for further education. e) The candidate and his/her parents must be in good standing with the sending school o Procedures for Awarding FA a) In addition to all other requirements for admission, a Parent's Financial Statement must be submitted to the School and Student Service for Financial Aid. This application requests information pertaining to the family's ability to pay for independent education b) The family must supply the Director of Admissions and FA with the preceding year's tax forms. These forms are used to verify information supplied on the SSS application and identify extenuating circumstances. c) Once all required materials are submitted and the family has a demonstrated need, ULS offers a FA award. Typically, awards range from 60 to 80 percent of the family's demonstrated need, and no more than 80 percent of the tuition cost. o Financial Assistance Renewals a) Students receiving FA must meet the published academic and citizenship requirements of their division to be eligible for renewal. b) The student's attitude toward and general contribution to the school and his/her willingness to achieve to the best of his/her ability are important considerations in the renewal process. c) Unless a family's financial situation has changed significantly within the past year, they may expect to receive a similar award.d) The parents' support of and cooperation within the school community are also an important consideration in the renewal process. e) Families must reapply for FA each year. o Returning Students Requesting Assistance for the First Time a) The FA office accepts applications from families who have not received financial assistance in the past. b) If it is possible to meet the family's financial need without exceeding the budgeted funds for returning families c) If it is not possible to meet the family's financial need, ULS may offer less than the family qualifies for or we may place the student's name on a waiting list for financial aid that may become available during the spring or summer months. d) It is our expectation that families who begin at ULS paying the full tuition will continue to do so, unless the enrollment of multiple siblings or unforeseen circumstances make that impossible. o Admission Acceptance and Financial Assistance Awards a) Although the admission application and financial application processes occur simultaneously applicants for admission to ULS are reviewed on a need-blind basis. b) Once accepted, applicants demonstrating financial need will be offered a financial assistance award for the upcoming school year. The student's enrollment at ULS will depend upon the family's acceptance of the FA award and willingness to pay the remaining amount of tuition. c) If the demonstrated financial need of accepted applicants exceeds the budgeted amount for new students, some students will be placed on a waiting list for FA. d) In no case will an applicant for ULS be denied admission because of financial need. e) Although it is extremely difficult for a family to receive an acceptance letter and a letter denying FA or one which places the student on the FA waiting list, we cannot presume that a family will not be able to find another way to attend ULS. o Financial Aid Waiting List a) The FA waiting list is not ranked; assistance awards made from the waiting list will be made according to ULS' enrollment needs. Consideration is also given to the current distribution of financial aid by grade. b) Funds may become available anytime between April 10 and the beginning of school in September. c) Families are not required to submit an enrollment agreement and deposit in order to remain on the waiting list. However, ULS cannot guarantee that a place will be available if and when assistance becomes available. d) If a family on the FA waiting list wishes to submit a signed enrollment agreement and deposit in order to reserve a space for their child, they may do so. However, it must be understood that under these circumstances, the family is responsible for the entire tuition should no FA become available for them at a later date. o Separated and Divorced Parents a) FA at ULS is based on need, not on a willingness or unwillingness to pay. It is our belief that divorced or separated parents retain the obligation to contribute to the education of their children whether or not there is a legal agreement between them to do so. b) ULS does not strictly adhere to a divorce settlement's stipulation which outlines the exact amount each parent must contribute toward educational costs, or which parent is responsible for how long. Instead, we require each parent to contribute as much as our calculations show they can afford. This amount may be more, or less, than the amount given in the court's decision. c) The resources of both natural parents are considered in cases where a divorce or separation has taken place. The availability of complete information from both parents is essential to assure fair assessment of the family contribution. d) A Financial Statement for Parents Who Are Separated or Divorced must be submitted by the non-custodial parent in cases where the parent is actively involved in the student's life. e) Lack of FA applications or copies of 1040 tax forms from either natural parent may result in no FA being awarded. f) The director of admission may waive the requirement of financial information from the non-custodial parent when the noncustodial parent's whereabouts is unknown or when the non-custodial parent has given no financial support to the student for several years and has made no contact with the student during this time. g) If either of the natural parents remarries, ULS will take into consideration the obligations of the parent to his or her new family. We will include in the calculations the resources of the stepparent, keeping in mind the obligation of the stepparent to his or her natural children. o Procedures Obtain a Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) from the school's admissions office. PFS forms are mailed to ULS families currently receiving FA and applicants in January. Carefully complete the PFS and send it with the appropriate fee to SSS in Princeton, New Jersey. Supply the admissions office with a copy of IRS Form 1040 and related schedule. If applicable, the student's noncustodial parent must file a Financial Statement for Parents Who Are Separated or Divorced in the admission office. Deadlines: March 1 for renewals; April 1 for new applications. Requests received after these dates are subject to available funds. April 15, 1970 November 1, 1996
