(Required for section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations and section 4947(a)(1) trusts; optional for others.)
What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? To offer instruction and training in basic life principles based on the foundation of Judeo Christian tradition and morality through the medium of radio broadcasting.
Describe what was achieved in carrying out the organization's exempt purposes. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Overview: Word Radio Educational Foundation was organized to provide a platform to establish a non-commercial educational Christian radio broadcast outlet to communities in Maine and New Hampshire which would proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and teach Judeo Christian principles for life. The outreach of this radio broadcast outlet continues through the radio ministry of WSEW 88.7 FM licensed to Sanford, Maine. During this fiscal year, a power upgrade from 3200 watts to 10,000 watts of power and an extended listening area to northeastern Massachusetts was accomplished. The full power upgrade was completed and on the air on August 10, 2011. Simultaneously, it was time to act on the Construction Permit transfer of ownership from Calvary Chapel to Word Radio Educational Foundation, that was granted by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) on August 19, 2010. After extensive engineering and legal requirements were met, the construction of WRKJ, 88.5 FM licensed to Gorham, Maine, was begun. A tower site was located, a lease obtained, and plans for a transmitter building got underway. The location of this station in the college town of Gorham, the Sebago Lake area and the greater Portland vicinity was to provide an alternative Christian radio station beyond what was available to some degree in the area. Funding: Funding to support the ministry of Word Radio Educational Foundation / WSEW came through the generosity of individual donors, the shared participation of program producers, churches, and interested business sponsors that shared the goal of providing Christian programming to their communities. Word Radio Educational Foundation was also the recipient of a generous grant of $25,000 from the Davis Foundation, which was granted for the purchase of the new transmitting and antenna system for the 10,000 watt power upgrade. A Call to Partnership was undertaken in the late months of 2010 and into the early months of 2011 to assist in the day to day expenses as well as the increased expenses associated with the power upgrade, which among other things included increased power consumption as well as the construction expenses. The funding goal was met in April of 2011 with $52,000 raised through one time gifts & pledges. Programming Format: To reach the spiritual needs of our listeners, Biblical instruction is abundant in the form of sermons, dramas and special programming from a variety of speakers and program producers. The 24-hour format of WSEW 88.7 FM is also available for streaming from the internet. Inspirational music is offered from 1 AM to 5 AM on WSEW as an outreach to the working audience as well as the awake and awakening audience. Many listeners have spoken of their clock radios being set to WSEW 88.7, their drive to work in the early morning hours more inspirational, and for those who have difficulty sleeping, the music and soothing devotional topics are a welcome inspiration and comfort. Late Saturday afternoons and evenings are devoted to music of varying genres, from Christian oldies, to classic oldies, the Pat Boone show, bluegrass, a locally produced daily devotional and music program and contemporary Indie style. Sunday programming includes music for varying tastes, such as choral presentations by the National Christian Choir, the classic Sounds of Joy, the Gaither Homecoming and more Christian oldies. Community Service Programming: Local area hourly weather forecasts and news broadcasts are provided in the 24/7 format of WSEW 88.7. Several programs throughout the broadcast day and week highlight current events and commentary. Many programs are aired and issues covered that are of interest to the community at large on current events and topics of cultural conditions. A calendar of community events airs twice daily and is unique to our listening audience. It is offered free of charge to other non-profit organizations in the listening area. WSEW is an active participant in the Emergency Alert System as an EAS broadcast outlet and broadcasts all regularly required tests and is technically ready and able to provide all broadcasting services during an actual emergency. Special Election Coverage aired November 2nd , 2010, with appearances with Kevin Smith of the New Hampshire Cornerstone Action. Midterm election coverage continued on that night live from Chicago's Moody Network. Thanksgiving Day was replete with special programming, from music to drama to documentary. Christmas 2010 programming of general interest included Tenley Westbrook's Live Concert "Christmas for the Troops" which was aired via webcast from the United Methodist Church in Portsmouth NH on December 18. Monday to Thursday, December 20 to 23, WSEW aired Christmas Vintage Radio, from a command performance by Bob Hope to the troops in 1942, to the Great Gildersleeve selling trees for needy kids in 1953, Gene Autry's 1946 Nativity story, the radio drama of Miracle on 34th Street (1951) and the 1947 radio drama from It's A Wonderful Life. During the Christmas season, all the national program producers aired special Christmas programming. On Christmas Day, WSEW presented non-stop Christmas music, traditional songs, and contemporary songs of the season in addition to regularly scheduled music programs that were playing Christmas music. To reach out to our listening audience in a Christian evangelistic emphasis, WSEW airs weekly the Hour of Decision from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association as well a Need Him spots throughout the broadcast day on a daily basis. On Sunday, November 21, WSEW aired the evangelistic outreach of Harvest Ministries (Pastor Greg Lauri) and their Chicago Harvest crusade conclusion live An Evening of Hope, when Jeremy Camp, Steven Curtis Chapman and pastor Greg, shared their experiences with grief and the truth that answers those hard questions in a suffering world. As the year of 2011 turned in view, WSEW aired the Year in Review from the Moody Broadcasting Network. In addition, the amazing special from Life Issues Institute, "Melissa's Story", airing on January 22 and 23 in commemoration of Sanctity of Human Life Sunday The Christian holy days of Good Friday and Easter were celebrated with special programming Good Friday evening and all day on Easter, and with a dramatic special on the day between. Patriotic Programming: On Memorial Day WSEW presented the World Magazine Special featuring the latest news and analysis on today's military flashpoints from WORLD editor Mindy Belz, a powerful story of an American warrior, a stirring interview with retired U.S. Air Force "Taps" bugler Jari Villanueva, a poignant look back at the long life of a World War I veteran, as well as relevant historical analysis of the Civil War by WORLD editor in chief Marvin Olasky on this the 150th anniversary of the start of the great conflict. There was also a special airing of Chris Fabry Live when he was joined by Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Maurice Possley and Professor John Woodbridge to talk about a World War II story of courage and faith, concerning a Presbyterian minister, a second lieutenant from the U.S. named Teen Palm, Adolf Hitler and a mysterious gun. On the 4th of July WSEW presented a Life Issues special "A Lifetime Sacrifice: The Cost of Freedom" with Brad Mattes, interviewing parents, wives, and mothers, of military troops, some of whom have made the ultimate sacrifice. Future Plans: At the end of this fiscal year, September 30, 2011, as previously mentioned, WRKJ 88.5 FM in Gorham, Maine, was very close to being completed. It did start airing at full power on November 3, 2011. A proposal was underway with another non-profit, New Life Media, which, like Calvary Chapel last year, held construction permits for non-commercial radio stations, was not going to be able to complete its authorizations. Within this context, plans were on the horizon to assign these construction permits to Word Radio Educational Foundation in the ending months of 2011. The transfer of these permits would afford Word Radio Educational Foundation to expand its Christian radio outreach to the communities of Kennebunkport, Maine, and Conway, New Hampshire, which would reach into the Mt. Washington and Ossipee valleys. Program Goals: Through the outreach of Word Radio Educational Foundation and its present and future radio station facilities, many listeners have been, and will continue to be, touched by the powerful preaching of God's Word, the inspiring messages and music, and for the interested listener, tuning in the for the first time, an intriguing introduction into the Gospel of Jesus Christ, His love, mercy and grace, and the precepts of Christianity.
