(Required for section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations and section 4947(a)(1) trusts; optional for others.)
What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Beyond the Lines is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to serving youth in inner city communities through a comprehensive program of basketball and academic tutoring that promotes the physical, educational, and life skills necessary to prepare and empower them for leadership in their communities, and success in their personal lives.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Beyond the Lines' objective is to use basketball as a vehicle to teach, reinforce educational, social, and life skills through a sport which offers boys and girls similar opportunities for success. Our outreach targets children who are a minority, at-risk and/or from lower income households. Our purpose is to strengthen a player's game as well as their spirit. We offer year round programs in the form of challenging training academies, competitive leagues and popular camps. It's a place where boys and girls come to receive plenty of "Perspiration and Inspiration." Children progress through the High School Game, College Game, and Pro Game levels of the program earning certificates with each graduation. The administrators follow weekly lesson plans that can be delivered in 30-45 minutes on the basketball court or the classroom. The program uses a three step skills curriculum to "empower young people' by providing local youth and schools with a life skills program that promotes positive values, healthy habits, and education through the game of basketball-resulting in real life power, on and off the court. * High School Game curriculum: The focus is on understanding Rules, Practicing Proper Hygiene, talking with others, and appreciating diversity. * College Game Curriculum: Is geared on embracing fitness. Understanding Nutrition, and Improving Stud Skills. Staying Calm and Focused, dealing with Peer Pressure, and resolving conflicts. * Pro curriculum: Deals with Speaking in front of others, making good decisions, setting personal goals, planning to attain personal goals, overcoming challenges, and giving and receiving help. 1.2 Mission Beyond the Lines is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to serving youth in inner city communities through a comprehensive program of basketball and academic tutoring that promotes the physical, educational, and life skills necessary to prepare and empower them for leadership in their communities, and success in their personal lives. 1.3 Keys to Success * Utilizing the school system to promote the sports program and recruiting team coaches. * Minimize field maintenance and facility costs with the school and city park systems. * Maintaining the City Council's support to provide scholarship funds for needy youth who want to participate in sports. * Recruiting more corporate support for the sports program. * Maintaining a high approval rate with the area's parents and youth. 2.0 Organization Summary During the summer of 2010, Rodney Sheridan decided to move boldly to pursue a dream that he had to start an AAU basketball program that would offer more opportunities for at risk youths. He knew that while there were a couple of choices in the area who wished to compete at the AAU level, there was no meaningful local Lakewood organization that was available and committed not only the physical development but mental, social and education as well. What, Rodney did not realize at the time, was that there was a growing demand for more opportunities for young people to play AAU basketball and be involved with organized sport. As a former 18 year Wall Street Executive, 15 year Nonprofit Board Chairman, College player, AAU coach, as well as a high school coach, Rodney quickly learned that there were more potential players who wanted to play AAU basketball than there were opportunities. Accordingly, with the help of Randy Homes, Jean Drumright, and a few others, Rodney founded Beyond the Lines, Inc. a non-profit company. Beyond the Lines is a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt not-for-profit organization that provides children and families of Ocean County with an intensive activity based year round program that seeks to use sports as a vehicle to bridge gaps that impede the success of at risk youth. To give at risk youth hope for the future; to educate and empower, to eliminate the cycle of economic, social and educational decay that currently exists in low income areas of Ocean County. The organization has started with building an AAU Basketball program which would include teams for boys and girls and the goal of Beyond the Lines was simple and clear. We would invite qualified coaches to join the program who share a knowledge and commitment to fundamental skill development for the student-athletes whose ambition was to compete at the AAU level. The measure of success would not be calculated by wins and losses, but whether each player improved their skills and their knowledge of the game of basketball as well as improved in the classroom from the beginning of the season until the end of the season. Beyond the Lines would make it mandatory for these same student athletes to participate in its educational curriculum, mentoring, and counseling sessions. Everyone in the Beyond the Lines organization is a volunteer. Early on, we set out to identify a group of individuals who shared his passion for working with young people and who would volunteer to accept the challenges and responsibilities of serving on the Beyond the Lines Board of Directors. The organization was incorporated and is a member of the Central New Jersey AAU region and the national AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) organization since the inception.
