| Pt III, Line 2 | RESEARCH and DEVELOPMENT: In the spring of 2011, with support | |
| from the National Science Foundation, Craighead Beringia South | ||
| began a project to design and make improvements to radio telemetry | ||
| equipment used in wildlife studies, and at the same time greatly | ||
| reduce the unit cost. The technical improvement is to add an on- | ||
| demand capability of very quickly downloading data from the animal | ||
| collar and to lower power consumption and thereby increasing power | ||
| longevity and data capacity. Reducing unit costs will make | ||
| the technology available to a number of biologists and science students. | ||
| EAGLES and ENERGY DEVELOPMENT: Energy development is intensifying in | ||
| the inter-mountain region. We have begun studies in Central and | ||
| Eastern Montana, Southern and Central Wyoming to increase our | ||
| understanding of how eagles use their landscape and from this | ||
| offer constructive suggestions for future energy development. | ||
| SELENIUM TOXICITY: The Gros Ventre River is the second largest | ||
| drainage in Grand Teton National Park. Antidotal evidence suggests | ||
| that selenium levels may be impairing the ability of Bald Eagles, | ||
| Tundra Swans, and Ospreys to produce young. We have initiated | ||
| a feasibility study to evaluate the situation. | ||
| COUGAR ECOLOGY: Although in the twelfth year our cougar study | ||
| is shifting its emphasis from ecology to developing and | ||
| validating non-invasive population census techniques. | ||
