BY LEARNING FROM OTHERS IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS, OUR PARTICIPANTS CAN GAIN A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ABOUT THEIR DISEASE AND RENEWED HOPE ABOUT FIGHTING AND SURVIVING IT. REEL RECOVERY HAS GROWN FROM OUR BOOT-STRAPPED BEGINNINGS IN 2003, TO A THRIVING, SUCCESSFUL NON-PROFIT, THAT HAS NOW OFFERED A TOTAL OF 112 RETREATS IN 17 STATES, ALL COMPLETELY FREE TO THE PARTICIPANTS, SERVING WELL OVER 1,200 MEN. WE WILL CONDUCT 22 RETREATS IN 2012, SERVING 250-275 MEN. BY ALL OUR MEASURES, EVERY SINGLE RETREAT HAS BEEN A SUCCESS, PROVIDING A POWERFUL, MEANINGFUL AND ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE FOR THE MEN SERVED. EXPLANATION ON VOLUNTEERS AND TYPES OF SERVICES OR BENEFITS FORM 990, PAGE 1, PART I, LINE 6 DURING ITS 8 YEARS OF OPERATIONS, REEL RECOVERY HAS UTILIZED THE SERVICES OF OVER 900 INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE VOLUNTEERED TO HELP THE ORGANIZATION IN SOME CAPACITY. IT IS BECAUSE OF THIS WEALTH OF VOLUNTEER TALENT, REEL RECOVERY HAS BEEN ABLE TO OPERATE WITH ONLY ONE FULL-TIME PAID STAFF (THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR) AND APPLY A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF RESOURCES DIRECTLY TO PROGRAM SERVICES. BY FAR THE MOST COMMON VOLUNTEER SERVICE IS IN ORGANIZING, IMPLEMENTING AND STAFFING THE RETREATS THEMSELVES. IN EACH OF THE 17 STATES WHERE THE ORGANIZATION CONDUCTS RETREATS THERE IS A VOLUNTEER STATE COORDINATOR AND A TEAM OF HELPERS WHO RAISE LOCAL FUNDS, LIAISE WITH HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS TO RECRUIT PARTICIPANTS, AND INVOLVE THE LOCAL FLY FISHING COMMUNITY TO ENLIST BOTH FINANCIAL AND VOLUNTEER SUPPORT. AT EVERY RETREAT, THE ORGANIZATION HAS 2-4 VOLUNTEER FULL-TIME STAFFERS, SERVING AS RETREAT COORDINATOR, FLY FISHING INSTRUCTOR, MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL OR ASSISTANT COORDINATORS. IN ADDITION, AT EVERY RETREAT 12- 15 VOLUNTEER "FISHING BUDDIES" PROVIDE ONE-ON-ONE ASSISTANCE AND GUIDANCE TO THE PARTICIPANTS DURING THE TWO DAYS OF FLY FISHING ACTIVITIES. THE FULL-TIME STAFFERS CONTRIBUTE APPROXIMATELY 50 HOURS EACH, OR ABOUT 200 HOURS PER RETREAT, WHILE THE FISHING BUDDIES PROVIDE APPROXIMATELY 16 HOURS EACH, OR AN AVERAGE OF ANOTHER 200 PER RETREAT. ALONG WITH ABOUT 100 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER FUNDRAISING AND RETREAT PRE-PLANNING, THE ORGANIZATION RECEIVES ON AVERAGE ABOUT 500 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE PER RETREAT. ACROSS THE 19 RETREATS IN 2011, THAT TOTALS ABOUT 9,500 HOURS OF SERVICE.
FIRST ACCOMPLISHMENT DESCRIPTION FORM 990, PAGE 2, PART III, LINE 4A FRIENDSHIP AS WE STAND WITH A FISHING BUDDY AND SHARE THE DAY'S TRIUMPHS AND FAILURES. FOR PEOPLE WITH CANCER, A DAY OR TWO ON A STREAM BRINGS RELIEF FROM THEIR SUFFERING, AND HOPE FOR THEIR FUTURE. REEL RECOVERY IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING CANCER PATIENTS WITH INFORMATION, EDUCATION AND A NETWORK OF SUPPORT THAT WILL HELP THEM AS THEY PROCEED THROUGH THEIR CANCER TREATMENT AND/OR RECOVERY. WE ARE DIRECTLY ENHANCING THEIR ABILITY TO LEARN ABOUT AND MANAGE THEIR DISEASE. WE PROVIDE PARTICIPANTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN NEW INSIGHTS ABOUT LIVING WITH CANCER AND ABOUT COPING WITH THE PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL ASPECTS OF HAVING THE DISEASE. OUR PARTICIPANTS LEARN ABOUT TREATMENT OPTIONS, NAVIGATING THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, FACING MORTALITY, COPING WITH STRESSFUL FAMILY AND WORK RELATED SITUATIONS - IN SUM THE WHOLE GAMUT OF EXPERIENCES THAT LIFE WITH CANCER ENTAILS. BY LEARNING FROM OTHERS IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS, OUR PARTICIPANTS CAN GAIN A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ABOUT THEIR DISEASE AND RENEWED HOPE ABOUT FIGHTING AND SURVIVING IT. REEL RECOVERY HAS GROWN FROM OUR BOOT-STRAPPED BEGINNINGS IN 2003, TO A THRIVING, SUCCESSFUL NON-PROFIT, THAT HAS NOW OFFERED A TOTAL OF 112 RETREATS IN 17 STATES, ALL COMPLETELY FREE TO THE PARTICIPANTS, SERVING WELL OVER 1,200 MEN. WE WILL CONDUCT 22 RETREATS IN 2012, SERVING 250-275 MEN. BY ALL OUR MEASURES, EVERY SINGLE RETREAT HAS BEEN A SUCCESS, PROVIDING A POWERFUL, MEANINGFUL AND ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE FOR THE MEN SERVED.
