| F990_P03_S00_L04a | Form 990, Part III, Line 4a | Program Highlights 2010-2011 As we come to a close of the 2010-2011 debate season, the Glenn Pelham Foundation for Debate Education has much to be happy and excited about. This has been an outstanding year! By any measure of success, the league has seen unparalleled levels of participation and accomplishments. Below are just a few highlights: * Seniors graduating we admitted into schools such as Emory, Georgetown, Ga. Tech, Cornell, Morehouse, Rensselaer, Swarthmore, Carnegie Mellon, UGA, Ga. State, West Ga., and Boston University. * 2 Gates Millennium Scholars - This program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation selects only 1,000 talented students nationwide each year to receive full scholarships to use at any college or university of their choice. * Over 800 teams at 7 tournaments debated nearly 13,000 rounds. * Over 450 middle school students debated this year. * Over 100 high school students debated this year. * Over 60% of all students in middle and high school debated in two or more tournaments * Over 12,000 hours of volunteer judging time * Over 20 schools received approximately 250 hours instruction from AUDL volunteers either at the Debate Center, on site, or through Skype. * Assisted the launching of the Columbus Urban Debate League. * Over 10 new schools joined the league this year. * Had several publications and media stories - three articles were in peer-reviewed journals. Had students on Good Morning American, CNN, NPR, and various local news outlets. * Over 100 students served during the Atlanta Urban Debate Institute during the summer of 2011 * Over 12 students received scholarships to the Emory National Debate Institutes * We were awarded an opportunity to provide instruction for a 21st Century Learning Grant to a Title 1 School. * Sponsored a public debate on bullying with over 120 people from the community in attendance at the Rosel Fann Recreation Center in Atlanta, Ga. * Serving over 50 teachers and approximately 5000 students this summer using Debate Across the Curriculum for summer school instruction!!! This speaks volumes to the collective work of all the students, parents, educators, donors, and volunteers in the league |
