        SISTERS FOUNDATION 2011 54-1799752The purpose of the Sisters Foundation is to provide interest-free loans and grants to youths and working-poor adults in cases where a small amount of money will make a significant difference in people's lives: in financial emergencies, for improving people's circumstances, or to give a life-changing experience to someone who cannot afford it.Examples of financial emergencies include loss of income due to job loss, medical crisis or need to find a new place to live. We also clear old debt so that clients can qualify for rent subsidies or emergency housing and provide for moving and travel expenses. In the past we have provided clothing for new jobs, purchased medical devices. Our most frequent grants are for rent deposits or first month's rent. Examples of life changing experiences have included registration fees for a prejudice-reduction workshop, diversity training camp for teenagers and contributing toward the cost of a trip to Honduras to help rebuild a school after a hurricane.Until 2007 money for the grants and loans came exclusively from the President of the foundation, a successful author. In the last four years funding has been supplied additionally by the Executive Director of the Foundation. During 2011 an effort was made to raise funds from among the President's colleagues, professional romance writers. $975.45 was raised from nine donors.
