IMPACT STATEMENT
THE MISSION OF CADEKIDS, A 501 (C) (3) NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION REGISTERED IN PENNSYLVANIA, IS TO PROMOTE CHILDREN'S POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH THROUGH COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL- AND COMMUNITY-BASED YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT PROGRAMS THAT ARE BEGUN AT AN EARLY AGE AND ARE DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE POSITIVE CHOICES, WHILE REDUCING HIGH-RISK BEHAVIORS. DURING THE 2011-12 ACADEMIC YEAR, CADEKIDS PREVENTION SPECIALISTS SERVED IN 23 PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS, TEACHING IMPULSE CONTROL, SOCIAL DECISIONMAKING, AND SELF-ESTEEM-BUILDING CURRICULUM TO 6,700 STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM; WE REACHED ANOTHER 10,500 THROUGH PUBLIC SPEAKING, INFORMATION DISSEMINATION, ETC. CADEKIDS ALSO SERVED IN ONE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN NORRISTOWN, PA. INDEPENDENT EVALUATION OF CADEKIDS' 2008-09 SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PHILADELPHIA (SDP) PROGRAM (AUGUST 2010) BY NOTED EDUCATION RESEARCHER KATHY MEYERS SHOWS "REMARKABLE" SUCCESS AT "CHANGING ATTITUDES, DECISIONS & ENVIRONMENTS FOR KIDS" IN KEY RISK AREAS OF INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE (NOTE: SDP RESEARCH GUIDELINES PROHIBIT SURVEYS OF ACTUAL RISKY BEHAVIOR). AFTER CADEKIDS PARTICIPATION, MIDDLE AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED APPROVAL OF HITTING BACK, PUSHING OTHERS AROUND, AND SAYING MEAN THINGS; AND WERE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE LIKELY TO DESCRIBE THEIR FRIENDS AS NOT USING DRUGS, ALCOHOL, OR CIGARETTES. OVER A PRIOR FIVE-YEAR PERIOD, STUDENTS ASSOCIATED WITH CADEKIDS' PARTICIPATION (6,273) HAD BETTER ATTENDANCE RECORDS THAN NONPARTICIPANTS (7,927). (SOURCE: KATHERINE MEYERS, TAMMY WHITE, ET AL., 2009-10 CADEKIDS PROGRAM EVALUATION REPORT, AUGUST 2010, GREATER PHILADELPHIA URBAN AFFAIRS COALITION.) THE SDP OFFICE OF RESEARCH & EVALUATION'S MOST RECENT REVIEW OF CADEKIDS STATS REPORTED AN EXCEPTIONAL 98% GRADE-TO-GRADE PROMOTION RATE (2008). BY CONTRAST, APPROXIMATELY 50% OF SDP STUDENTS DROP OUT DURING THEIR 8TH-9TH GRADE YEARS. CADEKIDS' OUTSTANDING RESULTS COME AT A COST OF $100 PER STUDENT PER YEAR. PREVENTION RESEARCH SHOWS THAT $25 IS RETURNED ON EVERY $1.00 INVESTED IN PROGRAMS USED BY CADEKIDS. (SOURCES: MARK T. GREENBERG ET AL., "THE ECONOMIC RETURN ON PCCD'S INVESTMENT IN RESEARCH-BASED PROGRAMS: A COST-BENEFIT ASSESSMENT OF DELINQUENCY PREVENTION IN PENNSYLVANIA," 2008, WWW.PREVENTION.PSU.EDU)
