Explanation
Form 990-EZ Part III
As Herring Foundation of Hope HFOH enters 2013, its 14th year, the Foundation remains committed to delivering the most up-to-date, informative, and useful information available to any newly-diagnosed cancer patient in the USA. This is done via a Hope Kit, which covers a wide spectrum of topics that immediately force themselves into the life of a cancer patient. The Hope Kit components are regularly reviewed to ensure they are the most accurate, current, unbiased, and easy-to-read of materials available. In addition to the books, CD, and journal that are included, the Foundation has assembled a unique tabbed binder to use as a resource and repository for useful information during the recovery process. Each free Hope Kit has a retail value of over 150. The Herring Foundation of Hope relies on donations and annual fundraising efforts to raise the money to sustain the Hope Kit program. To date HFOH has shipped nearly 4,000 Hope Kits. The board of the Foundation decided in Fall 2012 to take an opportunity to fully revisit the way we operate and ensure that we are reaching as many patients as possible and addressing their needs to the greatest degree. As a first step in the process, the board engaged an outside facilitator, Terry Theisen, from The Theisen Group www.theisenconsulting.com, who specializes in directing non-profits to establish and meet their objectives. An all-day board session was held January 19, 2013. Key outcomes from that session are as follows 1 HFOH will engage The Schapiro Group, Inc. www.schapirogroup.com to perform market research to quantify the impact HFOH has had since its inception. A sampling of Hope Kit requestors and recipients will be contacted about the Hope Kit contents, the delivery mediums, potential enhancements, and other critical feedback. The work will begin March 2013 and end May 2013. 2 Based upon the findings of the research, the board will make decisions about the web site, the contents of the Hope Kit, possibility for disbursing the Kit through electronic mediums, provide feedback per items based on cancer type, age, gender, create the ability to add a gift card to a Hope Kit, and create a section for honor/in memory 3 The board will utilize the findings of the survey to create a new plan to get the Hope Kits into the hands of nurses, oncologists, therapists, outreach ministers, and others who regularly come in contact with newly-diagnosed cancer patients. An intial effort of this type is underway and is delivering tremendous impact and success in early stages. The goal of the above plans is to increase the monthly volume of Hope Kits shipped by 200 by year end 2013, with even greater growth in 2014.
