DETOUR THEATRE COMPANY HAS NOW GROWN TO BE A THEATRE COMPANY OF 40+ ACTORS LIVING WITH LIFE CHALLENGES SUCH AS DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, BLINDNESS, DEAFNESS, AUTISM AND/OR OTHER CHROMOSOMAL DISORDERS. IT IS OUR MISSION TO PROVIDE AN AUTHENTIC THEATRE EXPERIENCE FOR THIS POPULATION. TO THIS END WE WORK WEEKLY TO BI-WEEKLY TO PRODUCE TWO FULLY STAGED MUSICAL PERFORMANCES A YEAR. ALSO THIS YEAR WE HAVE ADDED, FOR A NOMINAL FEE, CREATIVE DRAMA CLASSES AT TWO FACILITIES SERVING THIS POPULATION. THESE CLASSES ARE FOR THOSE WHOSE DISABILITIES WOULD PREVENT THEM FROM SUCCEEDING IN OUR ALREADY ADAPTED CLASSES. OUR ACTORS ARE CHARGED 100 PER SHOW. A FULL 2/3S OF THIS COMPANY IS UNABLE TO PAY THIS AMOUNT. WE ALSO CONTRACT THE HELP OF 18+ DEDICATED COACHES WHO WORK DIRECTLY WITH 2 TO 3 CLIENTS. THESE COACHES ARE PAID NOMINALLY PER SHOW. WE ALSO CONTRACT WITH AN ACCOMPANIST, COSTUME DESIGNER AND SET ARTIST WHO HELP ASSURE THAT OUR PERFORMANCES WILL BE TRULY MEMORABLE - FOR BOTH SIDES OF THE PROSCENIUM. OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, GRANT-WRITER, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND ACCOUNTANT WORK WITHOUT STIPEND. THIS PAST YEAR WE PRESENTED A DOUBLE FEATURE OF HONK AND ALADDIN, JR., IN JANUARY 2011, AND JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAM COAT IN JUNE 2011. BECAUSE WE USED A SMALLER THEATRE IN JANUARY, WE RAN THE SHOW FOR TWO WEEKENDS. TICKET PRICE WAS 7 PER TICKET. JOSEPH, WITH GRANT SUPPORT FROM A LOCAL CULTURAL COUNCIL, WAS PRESENTED IN A MUCH LARGER THEATRE VENUE AND RAN FOR ONE WEEKEND. WE DID NOT CHARGE ADMISSION FOR THESE PERFORMANCES THOUGH DONATIONS WERE GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED. THIS PROGRAM IN ITS ENTIRETY IS SUPPORTED BY CONTRIBUTIONS FROM GENEROUS DONORS, A VARIETY OF GRANTS AND A VERY INVOLVED, ACTIVE FUND-RAISING COMMITTEE. ALL FUNDS ARE USED TO DIRECTLY OFFSET PRODUCTION, FACILITY RENTAL AND COACHING COSTS.
