4a (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 10,343,060 including grants of $ 9,792,149 ) (Revenue $   )
Through the 3,539 charitable funds established at the LCF, donors are expressing their values through giving. Each donor, gift and fund is part of the LCFs vision to achieve effective, positive and lasting change throughout our local, national and global community. Individuals and families created 192 new donor advised funds in 2012, and 37 faith-based nonprofits established new endowment funds at the LCF. Gifts to the LCF totaled $60.17 million in 2012, making 2012 one of the top three giving years in LCF history. Total outright and deferred gifts since inception exceed $835.49 million. In 2012, LCF funds granted $10.07 million to 2,648 charities, bringing the LCF grant total to $94.2 million since the LCFs inception in 1995. The majority of LCF grants (89%) are distributed from donor advised funds. The remaining 11% of LCF grants are distributed from organizational endowment funds and LCF Collaborative Funds.Charities recommended to receive support from LCF donor advised funds total more than 6,500. Types of charities include: congregations (29%); education (21%); human services (17%); faith-based nonprofits (16%); health services (7%); environmental concerns (3%); arts & culture (3%); disaster relief (2%) and other (2%). For the fifth consecutive year, the LCF earned Charity Navigators top four-star rating for sound fiscal management in 2012.The LCF Growth Portfolio, the LCFs standard portfolio, returned 12.2% for the year ending December 31, 2012, outperforming its strategic benchmarks by 1%. This investment performance occurred in the face of a volatile and uncertain global economic environment. The LCF navigated these volatile markets by focusing on the long-term implications of each portfolio decision and by maintaining a disciplined approach to rebalancing. The LCF adheres to the investment fundamentals of professional active management, allocation among eight asset classes and a long-term investment strategy to achieve donors charitable goals. Donors were kept informed of performance of the LCFs four investment portfolios though quarterly reports and an annual donor investment call featuring LCF investment advisors from Cambridge Associates. Donors are also encouraged to call the LCF for additional updates as needed. Throughout 2012, the LCF operated under budget while maintaining reserves that exceeded 50% of annual expenses. The LCF further developed several of its LCF Collaborative Funds in 2012. The issues addressed by these funds reflect donor interests and are informed by the LCFs relationship with the community. Each gift is joined with other donor gifts to address issues that call for a broader approach and more unified response.
4b (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 88,267 including grants of $ 85,379 ) (Revenue $   )
Program Initiatives of the LCF Collaborative FundsThe mission and vision of the LCF are driven by the rich Lutheran tradition of working to address important and diverse societal issues with creativity, passion and purpose. Consistent with this tradition, LCF Collaborative Funds focus on increasing the capacity of others, pursuing results that are measurable and meaningful. Together with donors, we are catalysts for large-scale social change grounded in these faith-based values. LCF Community Fund: Ending Family Violence Initiative Through this initiative, the LCF is sponsoring Healthy and Safe Congregation Workshops as part of its Ending Family Violence Initiative. Hundreds of church clergy and lay leaders attended these workshops in 2012, and returned to their congregations equipped to respond to victims/survivors and be safe places for the most vulnerable from a faith-based perspective. In addition to these workshops, the LCF also provided one-hour webinars to congregations and faith team leaders to address issues surrounding domestic violence. These webinars were available free of charge through an LCF grant to FaithTrust Institute.
4c (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 44,844 including grants of $ 41,050 ) (Revenue $   )
LCF Community Fund: Creation Care Environmental Initiative This initiative takes a Lutheran approach to building awareness of and lasting change to our relationship with Gods creation. Its focus is threefold: 1) Help churches reduce their energy footprint; 2) Promote leadership around creation care among pastors, laity and resident theologians within the Lutheran community; and 3) Engage donors around the concern of creation care and support their individual and collective efforts to make an impact.Through this initiative, the LCF is helping build the capacity of Lutherans Restoring Creation, a grassroots movement dedicated to fostering care for creation through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; Concordia Seminarys Center for Care of Creation pilot, created to partner with congregations to equip Christians to live out their lives as responsible stewards of Gods creation; and, Eco-Faith Recovery, to expand their creation care work with Lutheran leadership, youth, seminarians, Camp Lutherwood summer and staff.
