What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? Arts & Humanities Council of Charlotte County, Inc.The Arts & Humanities Council of Charlotte County, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation recognized as the local arts agency by the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners and the State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs. The council was incorporated on December 1, 1989. The purpose of the organization is to advocate, promote and develop the cultural climate of Charlotte County by promoting artists and arts organizations of all disciplines and encouraging the enjoyment and participation of our residents, students, and visitors.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Major Programming and ActivitiesOn-going annual programs:The Art in Public Places program continues to attract new artists wishing to exhibit their work and businesses wishing to host exhibits. We presently have 24 sites, a number of which hold opening receptions for the exhibiting artists. Twice a year, Emerging Artist Receptions are held allowing artists to show samples of their work and meet our site coordinators. Chosen from AIPP exhibiting artists, an Artist of the Month is honored with a proclamation by the Board of County Commissioners. The 160th artist will be honored in December, 2013.Call to Artists are sent via email sent to artist members and galleries. They include information about state and national exhibits, juried shows, residencies, and grants for visual artists and competitions, contests and residencies for writers. One hundred and thirty-four were sent with additional announcements during the year. The Councils held its 22st annual arts festival (Artsensation) in November 2012. Fifteen hundred people toured the exhibits and enjoyed music on two stages. Participating were artists, writers, cultural organizations, and children. Caf Philo, philosophical discussion groups meeting weekly at seven sites around the community. Approximately 200 people participate in the various groups which are free to the community. The Council has also advised other communities on starting their own Caf Philo programs. The Executive Director continues to appear on a local radio talk show, Charlotte County Speaks once a month. She invites local groups to join her, enabling the cultural organizations to promote their programs and events. Groups as diverse as the Visual Arts Center, the Peace River Quilters, the Charlotte Concert Band, and the Charlotte County Historic Center have appeared. The Executive Director chaired the arts and humanities component of Leadership Charlotte (a program of the Chamber of Commerce) for the fifteenth (15) year. She is a member of the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee and past member of the Chambers Board of Directors. She also sits on the Charlotte Community Foundations Grant Advisory Committee, the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Advisory Board, the Charlotte County Tourist Development Council. She was a founding member of the Artisans Atelier committee. The Council continues to produce publications for distribution to members, residents, and visitors. In February, 2007, the Charlotte Arts morphed from a bi-monthly insert in the Charlotte Sun to a weekly column written by the Executive Director. This change has enabled the Council to promote the events and programs of our cultural organizations and the council in a more timely fashion. The Councils website includes an Annual Calendar of the arts and cultural events presented by our 45 cultural organizations. Being on-line allows the Council to update the calendar weekly. The Council maintains an on-line Artists Directory of over 300 artists of all disciplines. The directory is on the councils website. It lists the artists by discipline and medium and links to their personal websites.Last June, the Council awarded three Charlie Awards: The Charlie is an annual award that recognizes outstanding initiative, leadership, or excellence in supporting the arts or humanities or as an artist in Charlotte County. Nominees may be individuals such as patrons, educators, or elected officials, or organizations such as arts groups, corporations, or public agencies. Recipients must have demonstrated a significant contribution to the advancement of the arts, in any discipline or field, such as visual arts, performing arts, or arts education through either a lifetime commitment, or a recent major achievement. This is the 17th year awards have been given. In September, 2007, the Council Board undertook a two day retreat for Strategic Planning. The retreat was facilitated by Nancy Johnson, M. Ed., certified trainer in participatory group methods of the Institute of Cultural Affairs (Phoenix, AZ) and Founding Director of the Mid-Atlantic Network of Youth and Family Services. During the final half day, volunteer members of the Council joined the Board. The Council identified three directions: 1.Fund and Grow the Organization2.Promote Positive Public Awareness3.Increase Effective ParticipationNew committees were formed and old ones bolstered to work on these issues. From that Strategic Planning retreat, a sub-committee was charged with developing a document outlining the four Core Programs of the Council: Arts in Education, Art in Public Places, Humanities and Chamber of the Arts. Responsibilities of the eight standing committees, the Executive Committee, Board Members and the Executive Director were defined. In November, 2007, the Arts & Humanities Council entered into contract with the Americans for the Arts to undertake an Economic Impact Survey. The survey showed that the non-profit arts community is a $21,000,000 impact in this community. The project was underwritten by the Council, the Enterprise Charlotte County Foundation, the Charlotte County Visitors Bureau, Enterprise Punta Gorda, the Visual Arts Center, the Charlotte Players, the Charlotte Symphony and Sea Grape Gallery. The Council continues to act as the Chamber of the Arts providing information to residents, visitors, students and teachers, etc. Art Therapy Program for Dementia Patients. In March 2009, the Council developed an Art Therapy Training Program to provide training and assistance to professional and family care givers to help people suffering from dementia express themselves artistically. In 2013, the program currently runs in twelve (12) sites serving participants in Adult Day Care, Assisted Living Facilities and Nursing Homes in this community. The seventh (7) Train the Trainer Workshop took place September 18, 2013, with 20 participants. Leaders of the program also developed a workbook outlining projects that can be used in the program. The Council was awarded a grant to publish the workbook by the Charlotte Community Foundation. It was published in March 2012. The workbook is provided free within the county and sold elsewhere. Arts in Education: The Council supports Arts in Education. In the summer of 2011, it mounted an advocacy program to convince the CCPS to maintain arts classes in the schools. The Council also sponsors cash prizes for the County-wide High School Art Show each spring. Cultural Plan: In 2012, the Council embarked on developing a Cultural Plan for Charlotte County. We will invoke the transformative power of art to bring diverse people and groups together as we develop the plan. This cultural planning process will cultivate a transformative vision and an implementation plan for our community a plan that:Nurtures and builds our creative communityUnifies our entire county (for example, through visual aesthetics or marketing strategies)Identifies ways to strengthen bonds of art and culture to community and economic development initiativesIdentifies new ways to utilize the arts in supporting health, education and community safetyThe Council is presently raising funds to implement the project. It has received $10,000 from the Charlotte Community Foundation and $5,000 from the Charlotte County Government. We are currently applying to the Punta Gorda City Council and other local foundations for assistance. Arts Round Table: In January 2013, the Council invited Charlotte County cultural organizations to meet to discuss areas of mutual interest: marketing, ticketing, insurance, etc. The group has expanded and continues to meet bi-monthly. Meetings have included speakers on topics of interest. Special Events/Programs:The Council has continued to sponsor or co-sponsor special events and programs in Charlotte County. February 2008 present: TEAM Punta Gorda is a citizen based community service organization that organized after Hurricane Charlie to unite the city, county and community to preserve, rebuild and revitalize Punta Gorda. The Executive Director and an A&H Council board member sat on a sub-committee that investigated the viability of developing an Artisans Village. The committee conducted a census of artists, performers and writers to determine needs and wants of the artistic community. The Artisans Atelier was opened in October 2010 in the Herald Court Parking Garage. It provides artist workspace for minimum cost. It was a cooperative effort between the A&H Council, Team Punta Gorda, the Downtown Merchants Association, the Visual Arts Center, The City of Punta Gorda, the Charlotte County Chamber and the Punta Gorda Chamber. It has seven artists at the moment. The Executive Director served on the Artisans Atellier Governing Committee until July 2013. March 2008 present: The Arts & Humanities Council has taken a leading role in supporting local philanthropists who wishes to gift Charlotte County with a 26 acre botanical and sculpture garden located on the Pea
