UWEM BRINGS TOGETHER A COALITION OF THE HOST SCHOOL DISTRICT, A LOCAL FOOD PANTRY, COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND FISCAL SPONSORS TO PROVIDE BACKPACKS FILLED WITH NUTRITIOUS, EASILY ACCESSIBLE FOOD TO THESE CHILDREN EVERY WEEKEND. HUNGER NEGATIVELY IMPACTS CHILDREN'S ABILITY TO LEARN. THE BACKPACK FOOD PROGRAM MEASURES IMPROVEMENT IN ATTENTION, ATTITUDE, PARTICIPATION AND ACADEMICS. CURRENTLY UWEM IS SUPPORTING 10 BACKPACK PROGRAMS THAT ARE SERVING APPROXIMATELY 500 CHILDREN. HANCOCK COUNTY FOOD DRIVE IN 2013 114 BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS, CHURCHES AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS PARTICIPATED IN A MONTH LONG FOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT THE FOOD CUPBOARDS OF HANCOCK COUNTY. THIRTEEN CUPBOARDS RECEIVED FOOD. 12,350 POUNDS EQUALING APPROXIMATELY 10,291 MEALS AND VALUED AT 25,935. UNITED WAY OF EASTERN MAINE AND THE MAINE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION EACH CONTRIBUTED 5,000 IN MATCHING GRANT DOLLARS WHICH WERE DISTRIBUTED TO PARTICIPANT FOOD PANTRIES AND ALLOWED FOR THE PURCHASE OF AN ADDITIONAL 6,743 MEALS. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS FOOD DRIVE (NALC) THE UNITED WAY OF EASTERN MAINE CO-MANAGES THE NALC FOOD DRIVE EACH SPRING IN COOPERATION WITH THE NALC POSTAL WORKERS UNION. NALC IS THE LARGEST FOOD DRIVE IN THE UNITED STATES. UWEM HANDLES THE ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS AND RECRUITING OF VOLUNTEERS FOR THE DAY. LAST YEAR THIS DRIVE COLLECTED 74,112 POUNDS OF FOOD, TRANSLATING INTO 61,760 MEALS TO EASTERN MAINERS AND A TOTAL DOLLAR VALUE OF DONATED FOOD EQUALS 155,635. OVER 55 VOLUNTEERS SERVED ON THE DAY OF THE DRIVE PROVIDING ABOUT 350 HOURS TO SUPPORT POSTAL CARRIERS PICKING UP AND SORTING FOOD ITEMS. UWEM FOOD PANTRY PROJECT MORE THAN 20% OF MAINE HOUSEHOLDS DO NOT HAVE RELIABLE AND CONSISTENT ACCESS TO FOOD. ALTHOUGH THE HOLIDAY SEASON BRINGS MANY DONATIONS OF FOOD, BY SPRING, MANY PANTRIES EXPERIENCE A FOOD SHORTAGE. THROUGH OUR PANTRY PROJECT WE DISTRIBUTE SHELVING TO A DIFFERENT BUSINESS PARTNER FROM JANUARY THROUGH APRIL. THE FOOD COLLECTED EACH MONTH IS DISTRIBUTED THROUGH GOOD SHEPHERD FOOD BANK TO AREA FOOD CUPBOARDS. LAST YEAR 14 WORKPLACES PARTICIPATED RAISING 5,737 POUNDS OF FOOD WERE RAISED TRANSLATING INTO 4,780 MEALS. ANOTHER 2,814.50 IN CASH WAS ALSO COLLECTED; THE TOTAL DOLLAR VALUE OF THE DONATED FOOD AND MONEY EQUALS: 12,047.70. EDUCATION INITIATIVES: BORN LEARNING AGE ZERO TO FIVE IS CRITICAL IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CHILD'S BRAIN, SOCIAL SKILLS, ABILITY TO BOND AND MUCH MORE. A POSITIVE START IN LIFE HELPS KIDS SUCCEED NOT ONLY IN SCHOOL, BUT ALL THROUGHOUT LIFE. BORN LEARNING IS UNITED WAY'S INNOVATIVE PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT CAMPAIGN TO ENSURE YOUNG CHILDREN ARE NURTURED AND LEARNING RIGHT FROM BIRTH. BORN LEARNING PROVIDES PARENTS EASY TO USE, RESEARCH-BASED TIPS, TOOLS AND IDEAS FOR HOW TO CARE FOR THEIR CHILD, WHAT TO EXPECT AND HOW TO TURN EVERYDAY MOMENTS INTO LEARNING MOMENTS. ADDITIONALLY UWEM PARTNERS WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND GROUPS TO INSTALL BORN LEARNING TRAILS IN PUBLIC PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS; THE BORN LEARNING TRAIL IS AN INTERACTIVE, PLAYFUL AND VISIBLE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TOOL. MENTOR, TUTOR, READER DRIVE BY 2014 THE MENTOR, TUTOR, READER DRIVE WILL RECRUIT 1,000 NEW MENTORS, TUTORS AND READERS IN EASTERN MAINE. UWEM IS FOCUSED ON INCREASING THE NUMBER OF AND RETENTION RATE OF YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS AGES 11-24 AND INDIVIDUALS 55 AND OVER SERVING AS VOLUNTEERS IN PENOBSCOT COUNTY. UNITED WAY WILL ALSO FOCUS ON SUPPORTING VOLUNTEERISM THAT ADDRESSES LOCAL NEEDS RELATED TO DROPOUT PREVENTION, INCREASED HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATES, AND PURSUIT OF POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION. WHILE THIS INITIATIVE IS PRIMARILY FOCUSED IN PENOBSCOT COUNTY WE HAVE SEVERAL PARTNERS PARTICIPATING FROM OTHER COUNTIES IN OUR SERVICE AREA. INCOME INITIATIVES: EASTERN MAINE CAH COALITION A UWEM LED COLLABORATION, COMPRISED OF 20+ NON-AND FOR-PROFIT PARTNERS, WORKING TOGETHER TO HELP LOW AND MODERATE-INCOME MAINERS MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR MONEY. THE EASTERN MAINE CAH COALITION PROVIDES ACCESS TO FREE TAX PREPARATION, FINANCIAL EDUCATION, AND ASSET DEVELOPMENT PRODUCTS LEADING TO FINANCIAL STABILITY FOR FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS IN EASTERN MAINE. FOR THE 2012 TAX YEAR EASTERN MAINE CAH SERVED 4,989 INDIVIDUALS, BROUGHT IN 4,217,794 IN TOTAL REFUNDS, 1,082,411 OF WHICH IS IN EARNED INCOME TAX CREDITS. FOR TAX YEAR 2012 THE PROGRAM PROVIDED AN ESTIMATED 848,130 SAVINGS IN TAX PREPARATION SERVICES. EASTERN MAINE CAH OFFERS FREE TAX PREPARATION AT 75 SITES ACROSS OUR SERVICE AREA FROM JANUARY THROUGH APRIL. FAMILYWIZE-PRESCRIPTION DRUG CARDS UNITED WAY IS THE OFFICIAL PARTNER OF FAMILYWIZE COMMUNITY SERVICE PARTNERSHIP. FAMILYWIZE PLANS TO REDUCE THE COST OF PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE FOR CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS BY 1 BILLION BY THE END OF 2015. UWEM DISTRIBUTES PHARMACY DISCOUNT CARDS AT NO CHARGE TO ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS. IN 2012 THIS PROGRAM HELPED SAVE 395,000 IN HEALTH AND MEDICAL COSTS THROUGHOUT OUR SERVICE AREA. FEMA EMERGENCY FOOD & SHELTER PROGRAM (EFSP) UWEM ACTS AS THE LOCAL MANAGER FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY EMERGENCY FOOD & SHELTER PROGRAM (EFSP) FUNDS TO AREA SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES IN AN EFFORT TO HELP PEOPLE WITH ECONOMIC EMERGENCIES. EFSP FUNDS PROVIDE FOOD, SHELTER AND GENERAL ASSISTANCE TO THOSE IN NEED. IN THE PAST YEAR 63,000 HAS BEEN DISTRIBUTED TO HELP THOSE IN NEED OF FOOD AND SHELTER. HEALTH INITIATIVES: COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION GRANTS DOWNEAST COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION GRANT (CTG) IS A 5 YEAR, STATE WIDE, GRANT AIMED AT IMPROVING HEALTHY EATING AND ACTIVE LIVING FOR CHILDREN BASED AT EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION SITES AND SCHOOLS. CTG IS A NATION-WIDE EFFORT BY NATIONAL CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) TO ACHIEVE MEASURABLE HEALTH OUTCOMES IN KEY HEALTH FOCUS AREAS. UWEM IS A MEMBER OF THE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE (LEADERSHIP TEAM) FOR THE DOWNEAST AND PENQUIS PROJECTS AND SERVES AS FISCAL AGENT FOR THE DOWNEAST PROJECT. HEALTH AWARENESS PROJECT THE HEALTH AWARENESS PROJECT IS AN 8 WEEK COMMUNITY ORIENTED CURRICULUM THAT FOSTERS AND ESTABLISHES NEW RELATIONSHIPS AMONG INDIVIDUALS, ORGANIZATIONS AND UNITED WAY AFFILIATES. PARTICIPANTS LEARN ABOUT HEALTH AWARENESS: PATHS FOR IMPROVING HEALTH, ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE, AND THE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH THROUGH A LECTURE/DISCUSSION FORMAT USING PHOTOGRAPHY AS A MEDIUM. THIS PILOT PROJECT WAS CONDUCTED IN 2012-2013 IN BELFAST AND WILL BE REPLICATED IN COMMUNITIES, BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT OUR SERVICE AREA.

THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE SOLICITS INFORMATION FROM VARIOUS SOURCES INCLUDING MAINE ASSOCIATION OF NONPROFITS AND THE UNITED WAY OF AMERICA SALARY SURVEY TO EVALUATE THE ORGANIZATION'S EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION PROGRAM WITHIN THE MARKET. THE EVALUATION IS REVIEWED ANNUALLY AND IS INTENDED TO ENSURE THAT THE COMPENSATION PROGRAM FALLS WITHIN A REASONABLE RANGE OF COMPETITIVE PRACTICES FOR COMPARABLE POSITIONS AMONG SIMILARLY SITUATED ORGANIZATIONS. FOLLOWING THIS REVIEW, THE COMMITTEE REVIEWS AND APPROVES THE PRESIDENT'S COMPENSATION, BASE SALARY, ANNUAL INCENTIVE OPPORTUNITY ADJUSTMENT, AND OBJECTIVES AND GOALS FOR THE UPCOMING FISCAL YEAR AND CONSULTS WITH THE PRESIDENT AS TO SENIOR STAFF. THE COMMITTEE REVIEWS AND RECOMMENDS TO THE BOARD FOR APPROVAL, SALARY AND INCENTIVE AWARDS FOR THE PRESIDENT.
