TO PROMOTE INTER-CULTURAL APPRECIATION AND UNDERSTANDING THROUGH THE PRESENTATION OF GLOBAL MUSIC AND DANCE. THE CEDAR IS COMMITTED TO ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE AND INTEGRITY, DIVERSITY OF PROGRAMMING, SUPPORT FOR EMERGING ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH.
FIRST ACCOMPLISHMENT DESCRIPTION

CONSISTS OF AN ANNUAL GLOBAL ROOTS FESTIVAL AND MUSIC SERIES MSICA LATINA, JEWELS OF INDIA, AFRICAN SUMMER, AND WEST AFRICA, WEST BANK, WHICH FEATURE EDUCATIONAL EVENTS AND PUBLIC CONCERT PERFORMANCES BY SKILLED ARTISTS FROM VARIOUS CULTURAL TRADITIONS. WE HOSTED OUR FOURTH ANNUAL GLOBAL ROOTS FESTIVAL IN SEPTEMBER, WHICH WAS COMPLETELY FREE FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW. THE 2012 FESTIVAL INCLUDED TWO DAYTIME PROGRAMS AND THREE NIGHTS OF MUSIC BY SIX DIFFERENT GROUPS: JPP FROM FINLAND, TRIO BRASILEIRO FROM BRAZIL, MOVITS FROM SWEDEN, MC RAI FROM TUNISIA, M.A.K.U. SOUNDSYSTEM, AN AFRO-COLOMBIAN BAND BASED IN NEW YORK, AND RANA SANATACRUZ FROM MEXICO. THIS WAS OUR MOST SUCCESSFUL GLOBAL ROOTS FESTIVAL TO DATE: ABOUT 1,000 AUDIENCE MEMBERS CAME THROUGH OUR DOORS TO SEE THESE MUSICIANS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. AFRICAN SUMMER WAS BORN OUT OF THE LARGE NUMBER OF AFRICAN ARTISTS TOURING NORTH AMERICA: WE HOSTED AN UNPRECEDENTED EIGHT PERFORMANCES BY BANDS FROM ALL OVER THE CONTINENT FROM JUNE THROUGH AUGUST, INCLUDING MEMORABLE CONCERTS FROM ORCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO (REPUBLIC OF BENIN), JOHNNY CLEGG (SOUTH AFRICA), SPOEK MATHAMBO (SOUTH AFRICA) AND SMOD (MALI). THE SERIES CONCLUDED IN SPECTACULAR FASHION WITH A SOLD-OUT AMADOU & MARIAM (MALI) CONCERT, WHICH WAS SURELY ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SHOWS IN CEDAR HISTORY.
SECOND ACCOMPLISHMENT DESCRIPTION

WE HOSTED A WEEK-LONG RESIDENCY WITH LONDON-BASED SOMALI PERFORMER AAR MAANTA. AAR WAS SLATED TO HEADLINE OUR 2011 GLOBAL ROOTS FESTIVAL, BUT HIS BAND WAS NOT ALLOWED ENTRY IN THE U.S. DUE TO VISA ISSUES. THE BAND'S VISIT WAS RESCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 2012 AND INCLUDED WORKSHOPS AND SITE VISITS WITH LOCAL SOMALI YOUTH GROUPS AND YOUNG ADULTS AS WELL AS A PUBLIC CONCERT PERFORMANCE. WE ENGAGED NEARLY 300 INDIVIDUALS FROM THE SOMALI COMMUNITY WITH THE WORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCES.
THIRD ACCOMPLISHMENT DESCRIPTION

ALLOWED US TO LEVERAGE ADDITIONAL RESOURCES FOR THE ARTISTS AND TO ENGAGE A LARGER NUMBER OF AUDIENCE MEMBERS ON A MORE MEANINGFUL LEVEL. THE ARTISTS WORKED ON THEIR COMMISSIONS THROUGHOUT 2012 AND ARE NOW PRESENTING THEIR WORK IN A SERIES OF PRESENTATIONS IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY OF 2013.

THE SALARY IS THEN NEGOTIATED WITH THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BASED ON THAT PACKAGE. THE COMMITTEE ISSUES FINAL APPROVAL OF THE FULL COMPENSATION PACKAGE.
