Identifier Return Reference Explanation
SchD_P01_S00_L01 Schedule D, Part I, Line 1 Donor advised funds comprise a significant portion of CJP's operations. Year-to-year changes in contributions to and grants from donor advised funds may cause CJP's contributions and programmatic expenditures to fluctuate. Comparative information is presented below: Fiscal 11: funds at year end 549; contributions $80,337,968; grants $71,903,438; Fair Value at 6-30-11 $243,406,714. Fiscal 12: funds at year end 576; contributions $165,165,914; grants $49,046,386; Fair Value at 6-30-12 $345,613,000.
SchD_P03_S00_L04 Schedule D, Part III, Line 4 CJP does not maintain art collections as part of its exempt purpose. In fiscal 2012 CJP received a gift of art with the understanding that it would be sold and the cash proceeds will be used for charitable purposes as part of the donor advised fund program.
SchD_P05_S00_L04 Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 CJP's endowment funds support varied programs in the Jewish community of greater Boston, including Jewish education, housing for disabled persons, and employment. They also protect CJP's long-term ability to provide such services in the future.
SchD_P10_S00_L02 Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 CJP is recognized as an organization exempt from income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. However, certain activities of exempt organizations, to the extent profitable, may be subject to Federal and state taxation as unrelated business income. No provision for income taxes has been made in these financial statements, as management has identified no tax liability. CJP recognizes the financial statement impact of a tax position only after determining that the relevant tax authority would have a greater than 50 percent likelihood of sustaining the position following an audit. CJP's most significant position related to taxes is its charitable status and the resulting exemption from income taxes. CJP has applied this more-likely-than-not threshold to all tax positions for which the statute of limitation is open and determined there were no material uncertain tax positions of June 30, 2012 and 2011.
SchD_P11_S00_L08 Schedule D, Part XI, Line 8 Line 8 adds back book revenue that is not included in the 990. On July 1, 2011 CJP acquired the Friends of the New England Holocaust Memorial, a nonprofit organization EIN 22-2810995, whose purpose was to raise funds and build the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston. This required that CJP record the assets and liabilities at fair market value which resulted in an increase in net assets of $7,129,448. CJP's audited financial statements are prepared on a consolidated basis, including supporting foundations and the Jewish Community Endowment Pool (JCEP) of which CJP is the partner of record and beneficial owner of 57.18% of JCEP partnership interest. As a result loss related to the JCEP partners of $1,635,811 must be added back and the supporting organization gain of $764,316 is added back. These adjustments total $9,529,575.
SchD_P12_S00_L02d Schedule D, Part XII, Line 2d In the 990 revenue is reduced by rental expenses of $1,050,072, event expenses of $420,319 and supporting foundation revenue of $940,765, a total reduction of $2,411,156.
SchD_P12_S00_L04b Schedule D, Part XII, Line 4b The 990 includes JCEP service fees of $234,000 netted against expense in the financial statements, and does not include investment advisory fees of $1,500 and a transfer of $780,085 that were netted against revenue in the financial statements. These combined additions to reported revenue on the 990 total $1,015,56.
SchD_P13_S00_L02d Schedule D, Part XIII, Line 2d This includes expenditures incurred by supporting organizations that were reported in the consolidated financial statements but which are excluded from the 990 of $176,449, rental expenses of $1,050,072 that are netted against rental revenue on the 990 and $420,319 of direct event expenses that are netted against event revenue on the 990.
SchD_P13_S00_L04b Schedule D, Part XIII, Line 4b This includes Jewish Community Endowment Fees recorded as offsets to expenses of $234,000, $1,500 of investment expenses and $780,086 transfer to Net Gen 16 Addington Road, Inc., a related supporting organization providing housing to persons with disabilities.

SchF_P01_S00_L02 Schedule F, Part I, Line 2 Generally, CJP makes grants to US charities and does not require extensive reporting on the use of the funds as those organizations file separate informational returns (Form 990). F990_P06_S0A_L02 Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2 Robert Small and Brad Bloom are employed at the same firm.
F990_P06_S0B_L11b Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b The form 990 is prepared by management, reviewed by CJP's audit firm, and reviewed by the Audit Committee, a standing committee of the Board of Directors. Prior to filing, the 990, except for Schedule B, is provided to all of the Board members and is presented for questions and comment at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Directors. In recognition of the Jewish tradition of anonymous philanthropy and out of respect for the confidential nature of the philanthropy of our donors, CJP's Board of Directors has voted to delegate responsibility for review of Schedule B to the Chair of the Board. The Chair of the Board reviewed the Schedule B at the April 25, 2013 meeting of the Board of Directors prior to filing of the return.
F990_P06_S0B_L12c Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c Annually questionnaires are sent to the Board of Directors, officers and key employees. The responses are returned to the CFO and are reviewed to identify if any respondent knows of a potential conflict of interest or of a family member at a firm with whom CJP does business. Any such conflicts are reported to the Chair of the Board. All transactions with firms associated with board members are made at arms length and with terms that are normal and customary for the industry. No transactions met the thresholds or requirements for reporting on Schedule L.
F990_P06_S0B_L15 Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 CJP has a Board committee on Organizational Development. Comprised of board members, this committee reviews the compensation of all key personnel. Comparative salary information is obtained from multiple sources, including the Jewish Federations of North America, an umbrella organization that aggregates information from many federations nationally. This review is done annually. Minutes of the Organizational Development committee are recorded contemporaneously.
F990_P06_S0C_L19 Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19 CJP's organizing documents are available on line through the attorney general's office in Massachusetts. The audited financial statements, 990 and 990-T are posted on CJP's website and the 990 is available on line through Guidestar.org. CJP has not yet made its conflict of interest policy public, although its questionnaire has been shared with other nonprofit organizations.
F990_P11_S00_L05 Form 990, Part XI, Line 5 Line 5 includes substantive differences between book and tax for the statement of activities. Unrealized investment losses of -18,760,942 are offset by revenue described below. As of July 1, 2011, CJP merged with the Friends of the New England Holocaust Memorial, Inc., a nonprofit organization EIN 22-2810995, whose purpose was to raise funds and build the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston. This merger, treated as a acquisition, required that CJP record the assets and liabilities at fair market value which resulted in an increase in net assets of $7,129,448. CJP's audited financial statements are prepared on a consolidated basis, including supporting foundations and the Jewish Community Endowment Pool (JCEP) of which CJP is the partner of record and beneficial owner of 57.18% of JCEP partnership interest. As a result losses related to the JCEP partners of $1,635,811 must be added back. These adjustments result in a reduction in net assets of -9,995,664.
