EIRH's strengths include access to Essentia Health's large rural patient population. Its organized group practice network covers a 2 million-person service area, of which approximately 40 percent are Essentia Health patients. Essentia system integration has led to: common standards of care, improved access to primary/specialized services, enhanced quality/safety, and better communication with patients. An electronic data warehouse that pulls data from all electronic health records, system-wide, was operational by the end of calendar year 2012. Essentia's system integration provides an important foundation for EIRH and its focus on rural health services research and ultimately improve the health and well-being of rural residents located within the Essentia service area. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2012, EIRH received $1.1M in external contract support. EIRH researchers submitted 34 grant applications to federal/state agencies and foundations, and increased support staff to 58 full time equivalent employees. The plan is to continue to recruit additional researchers and staff so EIRH can achieve its goal of becoming a nationally recognized leader for research and education by 2018. Form 990, Part III, Line 4b Essentia Institute of Rural Health's Education Division helps prepare a collaborative, rural ready primary care workforce through educational programs for residents and medical/health science students enrolled in universities and colleges within the four-state region. EIRH houses a continuing education program for practicing physicians, nurses and pharmacists using distance-learning technologies, and operates an electronic medical library that provides services and resources to a wide range of clinical staff.
