Every day, we focus on changing lives in meaningful and fulfilling ways. Through collaboration, we believe there are endless opportunities to connect and enrich lives while addressing critical societal needs.STRENGTHENING THE COMMUNITY IS OUR CAUSEThe Somerset Hills YMCA makes an impact in the community we serve by directly engaging over 20,000 children, teens, adults and seniors from

FOR HEALTHY LIVING: Improving the health and well-being of our communities We believe every child should learn to swim so they can safe around water - AquaticsOver 1,500 children attended swim instruction classes over the course of 2012. The Y not only teaches people of all ages how to swim, but also offers classes to enhance enjoyment of the water such as safety skills, recreational swimming and water exercise. Area schools, houses of worship and other nonprofits use our aquatic facilities for instructional, recreational and therapeutic purposes. Additionally, more than 100 children learned water safety through Y-Splash, a low-cost program offered at the Y that teaches children basic swimming skills and how to be safe in and around water. In 2012, the Y offered 10 programs for individuals with special needs. The programs include the STARS (Sharing Therapy and Realizing Self Strengths), Special Olympics, and Saturdays in Motion programs, as well as the PALS and BUDDIES program, which teaches pre-school children with autism to swim, and the Achievers program, which is designed to teach career skills that improve job retention among individuals with special needs; all these are examples of programs designed for individuals and families with special needs. These mission-driven programs highlight the importance that the Y places on nurturing and safeguarding our children. We believe in encouraging healthy living - Health and FitnessSince our inception, our Y has provided health and fitness programs as an integral part of our mission. The list of programs and services is quite extensive and spans the categories of group exercise classes, strength training, yoga, and stress and weight management. Every wellness offering is designed with the overarching goal of promoting a healthy balance of spirit, mind, and body that improves overall well-being.Our Y has joined an unprecedented national mobilization effort to combat rising levels of obesity, especially among our youth. Collaborations with some local schools have paved the way for our staff to integrate our programs into the schools physical education and field days. Children in our Child Care programs participate in the Healthy U curriculum and enjoy healthy snacks, as well as 30 minutes of vigorous activity each day. The Ys wellness program geared towards young people includes Youth Strength Training, Kids Zumba, and Yoga. Among our most noteworthy wellness programs is LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, which continues to support cancer patients and survivors. This 12-week program is offered free to all members of the community thanks to the Strong Kids Campaign. The program gives cancer survivors a place to go for camaraderie, exercise, and hope.We believe in the value of play for a healthy spirit, mind and body - Sports and RecreationFrom classes to recreational leagues, clubs to competitive teams, our Y offers a wide variety of sports and recreation activities. Programs focused on promoting strength and athleticism are also designed to develop a childs mind by instilling positive values like teamwork, honesty, and fair play. We offer programs for all ages, interests and abilities, which aim to teach the skills that are the foundation for future play. As part of our sports initiative, our staff has integrated its services with some local schools as a complement to the physical education programs. More specifically, we provide active programming for local schools field days, and intramural sport programming for youth not participating in school athletics. We believe values and skills learned early are vital building blocks for quality of life - Arts and Humanities (including Gymnastics)The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships. Unlike many other curriculums where correct answers and rules prevail, the focus in the arts is on judgment rather than rules. From reading and discussion groups, literary, performing, and visual arts to crafts, the Y offers programs for creative expression for all ages and abilities. Enrollment in Dance department and Dance Team continued to increase and now six different dance teams participate in competitions. Additionally, we continue to respond to the growing interest for creative expression by working in collaboration with other arts organizations and area school districts to supplement and enhance existing programs. For the fifth year, our Y collaborated with the Lucia Bocchino Foundation to host an art exhibit and contest that seeks to inspire youth to explore the medium of art by expressing their appreciation of female role models in their lives.
4b (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 2,995,692 including grants of $   ) (Revenue $ 2,576,594 )
FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: Nurturing the potential of every child and teen We believe every child deserves a summer camp experience and a chance to thrive - Child Care and Summer CampYouth are involved in our YMCA in many ways, but infant through school-age care (ages 3 months through 11 years) is one of our Ys largest program areas. More than 60 children are enrolled in our state licensed full day childcare center located in Bernards Township. In addition, our school-aged programs last year served over 400 children in partnership with five area school districts in 7 different locations. Over $300,000 in financial assistance was provided to families in need of quality child care services in 2012.Over the course of the summer, over 900 children and teens participate in a wide array (more than 20 types) of summer camps, with over $117,000 in financial assistance given to 143 campers in 2012. Additionally, thanks to our relationship with a local farm that donated its staff time and expertise, we once again provided campers with an incredible outdoor education experience. Additional activities in a natural environment include adventure programs, specialty camps, outdoor education, gardening and day camp.We believe teens make a difference - Youth and Teen DevelopmentA growing number of pre-teens and teens benefit from programs such as Service Learning Projects, Teen Board Advisors, Leaders Clubs (now with 50 members), as well as myriad collaborative programs with area schools and other service providers. In 2012, more than 65 teens joined the Y in a pilot program that offers free memberships to 7th grade students to build lifelong, healthy habits. The new Teen Scene recreation program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students drew over 200 participants over a four month period. Each week, 30 teen tutors gave free homework help to 50 kids as part of Students Helping Students Tutor sessions. Additionally, hundreds of teens volunteered on various projects, including the planting of a garden near the front entrance of the Y with multicolored flower bulbs in the shape of ribbon to create Autism awareness. We believe in developing character in all children and youth- Family StrengtheningParent-child programs, support groups, family nights, and counseling services all contribute toward strengthening the bonds between parents and their children. OVER 900 dads and their kids participated in our Adventure Guides program designed to allow fathers to share precious quality time with their children.
4c (Code:   ) (Expenses $ 1,303,931 including grants of $   ) (Revenue $ 143,639 )
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Giving back and providing support to our neighborsWe believe everyone should have the opportunity to be a part of the Y - Adult DevelopmentOur Y has programs for adults of all ages, including older adults. Programs include international exchanges, financial development, continuing education, volunteerism, and career and job-transition forums. We run a very successful triathlon training program for women and men, as well as a Masters Swim program.Additionally, our programs for older adults continue to grow. More than 400 individuals participated in programs for older adults enjoying, in particular, the pool, Strength & Balance, Zumba Gold and Senior Spin. Seniors benefit from the Ys participation in a Community Partnership for Seniors. In collaboration with other local organizations, the partnership offers presentations to seniors on relevant topics such health and well-being, nutrition, exercise, memory health and more. Seniors in our low-cost drop-in program also banded together to create and donate five memory quilts to individuals with Alzheimers.Career Forum, a free, volunteer-led program that provides attendees with opportunities to learn more about the job hunt process, interviewing and networking, remained a vital resource for over 1,800 individuals in job transition. Open and free to everyone in the community, this program provides valuable skills and support to those in job transition. This past year, 44 participants landed jobs, which was a record in the programs history. We believe that strengthening community is our cause - Helping those with Developmental DisabilitiesThe Somerset Hills YMCA provided upwards of 10 programs for people with special needs in 2012 and employs over 5 staff members with disabilities who thrive in the Ys nurturing environment and who epitomize the Ys passion to support all individuals to grow in spirit, mind and body. Working with other non-profits as well as public and private institutions such as Bethel Ridge, The ARC, Special Olympics, The Matheny School, Our House, Inc., and the Montgomery School, our Y supports and enhances the lives of our special needs neighbors. Besides the traditional social and recreational activities such as swimming lessons, arts, and music classes, we also provide life skills and job skills training opportunities, offering part-time and full-time jobs in a variety of venues, and our SNAP (Special Needs Adult Program) continues offering monthly social events. In addition, we expanded existing programs in 2012. S.W.I.M., Inc., continued to grow and invited participants with muscular impairment who are unable to exercise on dry land to enjoy the water. We also expanded Carousel Kids, a one-week camp-like program for children with special needs. In 2012, 80 children with special needs, primarily autism, enjoyed three weeks of Carousel kids a summer camp-like program. Additionally, 25 children with special needs participated in our summer day camp. Finally, the Somerset Hills YMCA partnered with a coalition of human service organizations and individuals concerned with public and mental health, youth and family development, adolescent medicine, and community education, to create the Healthy Outcomes Partnership (HOP). The partnership goal is to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues and to connect people to the appropriate care providers. Our certified instructors have provided a 12-hour adult course in Mental Health First Aid to 107 individuals, including front line Y staff who interact the most with our membership, representatives from local churches, teachers, school counselors, a school nurse, a person working in the mental health field and a person employed in the court system. Prior to the training, most of the attendees had little or no training in mental health yet they are most often first responders when someone is in crisis. The Y is proud to have two staff members who are the first Y employees nationwide to be certified as Mental Health First Aid Trainers, as well as the support of two grants that allow us to train others in Mental Health First Aid.We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we work together - VolunteerismIn 2012, the Y was fortunate to receive the assistance of nearly 1,000 volunteers who lent their time and talent to the Y. These volunteers help in a variety of ways; from policy to projects, our volunteers are the heart of the Y. At the 25th Annual Volunteer Recognition Night, several of our wonderful volunteers were recognized for their dedication to the Y. Additionally, the Y celebrated its 1st Annual Spirit Awards to thank and honor the many volunteers who give of their time and talent to the Y.
